I close my eyes, trying to focus my thoughts.

This mandatory meeting with my boss has my stomach bubbling with anxious energy. The thought of the promotion sends a thrill of excitement through me, but it's laced with fear.

What if they choose Logan over me?

His family ties to the company could give him an unfair advantage.

Then again, I've worked hard and earned my spot.

You've got this, Bailey.

As the elevator dings at the top floor, I take a deep breath, hyping myself up. After one last look at my reflection in the shiny elevator doors, I step out, ready to face whatever lies behind those black steel doors.

I knock on the door, heart pounding in my chest. "Come in," a deep voice calls from inside.

Taking a deep breath, I push open the door. His office is the epitome of power and luxury with mahogany walls, a massive oak desk, and a floor-to-ceiling view of the city. But today, it feels even more intimidating. I take a seat opposite him, folding my hands in my lap.

"You wanted to see me, sir?"

He looks up from the stack of papers on his desk, offering a small smile. "Yes, Bailey. Please, have a seat."

I'm already seated, but I nod, waiting for him to continue.

"Bailey, I want to talk to you about the promotion."

My heart skips a beat.

This is it.

This is it.

"Yes, sir?"

"I've decided to take a step back from the company," he admits, his eyes meeting mine with a seriousness I've rarely seen. "I'm planning to retire."

I blink at him, stunned. "Retire, sir? But why?"

"It's time, Bailey. I've been at this for a long time. It's time."

"But... the promotion?" I ask, apprehensive. "Does this mean...?"

"Yes," he interjects, understanding my question. "I'm not just offering you the promotion we previously discussed. I want to give you the opportunity to step into my shoes, to take my position."

Silence.

My mind freezes.

I'm sitting there like a dummy, trying to process his words. This was not just a promotion; it was the keys to the kingdom.

A sprinkle of fear, seasoned with a dash of excitement, started brewing in the pressure cooker of my brain. I suddenly wish I'd paid more attention to those deep breathing exercises in yoga class.

He leans back in his chair. "You aren't the only one being considered. There are a handful of other candidates."

My heart drops a little, but I nod.

Keep it cool.

Keep it cool.
