"I see."

"You'll have a fair shot along with everyone else.”

I can't help but wonder who else is in the running.

Is it possible...?

I hesitate, biting my lip.

I want to ask if Logan is one of the candidates, but I can't bring myself to ask it out loud. So, I nod again, forcing a smile. "I appreciate the opportunity, sir."

He clears his throat, shifting in his chair. "There's something else, Bailey." He pauses. "My son, Logan, will be working under your guidance for a while."

I blink, waiting for the punchline. It doesn't come. I was hoping he wasn't serious.

"I know, sir. He was in my office this morning and told me."

"He needs to learn the ropes, gain some operational experience... and I can't think of anyone more suitable than you to guide him."

A nervous laugh bubbles up, but I suppress it. This has to be a joke. A terrible, horribly timed joke.

"I know you'll teach him well."

"I'll do my best, sir. But I can’t promise that Logan will swap his love of Frappuccinos for the taste of corporate reality."

Did I really just say that out loud?

I can't seem to stop my big mouth from opening sometimes. "Maybe along the way, he’ll even learn that a necktie isn’t a noose."

Shit. There I go again.

He seems unfazed by my sarcasm. "Bailey, I know that Logan can be... difficult at times." He pauses, looking at a family photograph on his desk before meeting my eyes again. "But when he chooses to apply himself, he's one of the hardest workers I know. He has a lot to learn from you, that's true. But believe it or not, you might actually learn something from him, too."

I almost choke on his words.

What did he just say?

Learn from him?

HA.

Is there anything to learn from a silver spoon-fed, fake businessman who thinks the corporate world is a playground?

What can I possibly learn from him?

How to piss people off?

How to make coffee runs?

My mind scoffs at the thought.

No, there’s nothing that man can teach me...except maybe how not to behave in a professional setting.

The thoughts settle, but it doesn't soothe the irritation bubbling inside me.

I can't believe I have to babysit Logan...

"Alright, sir. I will do my best. For the company." I surprise myself with the conviction in my voice.
