"Listen, I don't give a damn about your excuses. I want my money, and I want it now, or things are going to get very, very unpleasant for you."

Unpleasant is an understatement in Ethan's world.

His gaze locks onto mine as I step into his office. A sardonic smile spreads across his face, his voice dripping with trademark sarcasm as he hangs up his call.

"Look who's finally come to visit. I was beginning to wonder if you'd forgotten where I live, Logan. Or did you lose my address along with your sense of family loyalty?" He leans back in his chair.

"Save it, Ethan," I cut him off. "I'm not here for a family reunion... I'm here to talk about the company."

Ethan raises an eyebrow as he waits for me to continue.

"I'm here to tell you not to take the position. We both know it's better off with someone else. Let the company thrive without us, Ethan."

He leans forward, resting his elbows on his desk. "What, so you said no?" He scoffs, shaking his head. "To do what, Logan? Something that will disappoint Dad even more?" He laughs, but his eyes are cold.

"It's none of your business," I snap, my patience wearing thin. "Just let it go. Bailey should take the position. She's more than capable and she's the best fit."

"Oh, Bailey?" he drawls. "Your little girlfriend?"

"She's not my girlfriend."

A chuckle echoes through the room as Ethan reclines in his chair, crossing his arms over his chest. "So defensive, Logan. Gina told me she left your house the other morning."

"Oh, Gina told you? Isn't that sweet? Birds of a feather do tend to flock together. And everyone knows, shady sticks with shady."

“So quick to call others shady, Logan. But wasn't it Gina who made you look like an idiot not long ago? Tripped you up right when you thought you had her all figured out, huh? You may call us shady, but you're the one who took the bait." His laugh echoes around the room, an obnoxious reminder of past humiliations. “What would Bailey think if she knew how you went behind your brother’s back and slept with his girlfriend?”

"Enough, Ethan!" I growl, my fist slamming onto his desk. The impact sends a jolt through my arm, but I barely notice. The mention of Bailey struck a nerve. "Leave Bailey out of this." My voice bounces off the cold, hard walls.

Ethan's eyebrows twitch.

"This isn't about Bailey. This is about the company. About what's best for it. And what's best is neither of us being in charge."

Ethan stands up and starts walking toward me. “What’s wrong, Logan?” he taunts. "Scared of what might happen if your little girlfriend knew the real Logan?”

"Shut up, Ethan."

"Don't worry, Logan. I'll be sure to keep an eye on her for you."

His words hit their mark and anger sweeps over me.

Enough is enough.

With a swift motion, I move across the room and land a punch square on Ethan's face. He stumbles back, surprise written all over his face, a thin stream of blood trickling down from his broken nose. "Don't underestimate me, Ethan," I warn, my voice cold with an anger that surprises even me.

I turn to leave, but pause at the doorway and look over my shoulder. "If you fucking take that job, I swear to you... Don't fuck with me, Ethan."

I don't wait for his response as I leave Ethan in his office, nursing his bruised ego and broken nose.

BAILEY

Iget to work early and I sigh in relief.

Logan's day off.

Perfect.
