Once upon a time, I reinvented myself. I hate the fact that the only way I could do that was to keep secrets. But I’ve never once regretted it. Not yet.

The pain of not letting anyone close to me is a lighter load to bear than the weight of my past.

As long as I keep my head down and focus on what keeps me grounded and sane, I’m fine with a private personal life. It’s… isolating at times. Nothing I can’t handle though.

“I don’t have time to fuck around at the bars.”

“Oh come on. It’s theweekend. As long as the work’s done I know Boss won’t mind,” he argues.

I quirk an eyebrow. “Oh yeah? And how do you know that?”

He taps the side of his head and smirks “I know everything.”

Cocky bastard.

I can’t help but laugh. No one knows better than me whether or notthe Bosswould mind.

I shake my head and lean down to pat my horse’s neck under her thick mane.

“No such things as weekends on a ranch, shithead.”

Chapter 4

Blythe

Ineed a piping hot cup of tea, a ridiculously soft blanket, and to take off this god-forsaken bra.

I slam the door to my apartment shut, instantly dropping my bag and kicking my shoes off. Normally, I’m insanely organized and clean in my living space. But today I don’t have the extra energy to neatly place my things where they belong.

Before I make it past the entryway, I can already smell the Chinese food and a candle burning. That can only mean one thing.

“Kee?!” I yell down the hall while I shrug off my coat.

“In here!”

There’s one thing that has kept me afloat during medical school: my best friend Keanna. She knows no boundaries and I gave up on not letting her into my place at all hours of the day and night. I finally made her a key a few months into my first year here.

“You wouldn’t believe what I got to do today,” she mumbles, mouth full of fried rice. She points at her takeout box “You want some?”

“I’m not hungry. Thanks though. What did you get to do?”

“The chief of surgery let me scrub in on a transplant. A transplant, B! With the chief! She’s amazing. I wish this internship didn’t have to end. If they don’t accept me into the residency program I might cry.”

Keanna is a year ahead of me and has been a surgical intern for the last nine months. I wish I had her energy and enthusiasm. She’s always so full of light when she speaks about her job. No one on the planet was more meant to be a doctor than her.

“Wow that’s amazing,” I say.

“Well don’t sound too excited,” she laughs.

I rub at my temples with my thumb and forefinger. The light on the tea kettle flickers as I turn on the switch. I turn back around, wrap my arms around her shoulders, and squeeze.

“I’m sorry. I’m excited, I promise! I love that you got to do that today.”

She pats my arm and lays her head back on my shoulder.

“I’m worried about you, you know?”

“Here we go.” I groan and move to pick out a teacup from my extensive collection. A creeping heat starts in my chest and I rub it absentmindedly.
