Johnny, Sebastian, Bert, and I all stood on the street outside the jail. It was starting to get dark.

“You heard what he said – we need to get a game plan,” Sebastian said, then turned to Bert. “Can you help us?”

“Long as I’m in court at 8AM tomorrow. What are you thinking?”

Sebastian turned to Johnny. “If you were going to poison Augustus Templeton – ”

Bert held up his hands like Whoa! “Easy on the language there, buddy.”

Sebastian rolled his eyes. “Given that we know he died quickly, if someone were going to try to poison Augustus Templeton, when would be the best time to do it? Assuming it wasn’t during the meal.”

Johnny thought for a second. “Definitely after he left the penthouse. Maybe in the limo.”

“Could the limo driver have done it?” I asked. “Or one of the bodyguards?”

“Definitely.”

Sebastian turned to Bert. “Do we have a list with the names of the driver and the bodyguards?”

“Yes. In the police report,” Bert said, fishing out a piece of paper from his briefcase.

“If they poisoned him in the limo, would there be traces inside?” Sebastian asked.

Jonny nodded. “Probably.”

“Find the driver,” Sebastian ordered. “Once we find him, we can get the limo and have it checked out by the police. If there’s any evidence of the poisoning occurring in there, Connor goes free.”

“How’s he going to find him?” I asked.

“One of those internet services where you pay to get people’s address.”

“What about Lily?” Johnny asked. “I’m supposed to guard her.”

“I’ll call Armin or Leo and get one of them to cover for you.”

Bert held up the police report. Johnny reached for it, but Bert held it back.

“Take a picture of whatever you need, but I need this one for the case,” Bert said, so Johnny pulled out his cell phone and took a picture of the necessary information.

“I’ll have a discussion with the bodyguards, too,” Johnny said.

“What’re you going to do?” I scoffed. “Ask them nicely if they killed Connor’s father?”

To my surprise, neither Johnny nor Sebastian reacted. They just looked grim.

My eyes bugged out. “You’re not going to – ”

“I don’t want to know about it,” Bert said, then looked at me. “And neither do you.”

I gave Johnny a nervous, sideways glance, then decided Bert was right.

“I’ll contact Grant,” Sebastian said, then looked at Bert. “Can you get access to the evidence the police took from Mr. Templeton? His belongings, for instance?”

“The state has to make items available for inspection, but it’s not generally something they do the night before the arraignment.”

“That’s not what I asked.”
