I hated her.

Setting the brush down, I gingerly walked over to the glass pieces shattered on the floor, not caring if I stepped on them. The tears I'd been holding back fell.

"What the hell is going on in here?" Seth and Ricky came barreling into my room.

"Scar? What the hell?" Ricky growled angrily as he kneeled beside me. "Scar, back away. I'll take care of this, okay?" he said tenderly.

I shook my head vigorously, unable to see his face through my flood of tears. When I reached for the pieces, he gently grabbed my wrist. "Please, Scar. Let me take care of this," he pleaded. I finally gave in and scooted back on my butt until my back hit the bed, pulling my knees to my chest.

"I accidentally dropped it." Skylar easily lied through her teeth.

"Bullshit," Seth snapped, making Skylar flinch.

"It was an accident!" she yelled back.

“Skye, you need to leave the room now,” Ricky said in an eerie, calm voice.

“What?”

“You heard me. Leave. Now.”

“I told you it was an accident. Why do you always—"

“I said LEAVE!” Ricky was so angry, his chest was heaving, and he was breathing heavily.

Skylar bumped into Seth's shoulder as she stormed out.

I couldn't speak.

She took something special away from me. A gift that kept me calm on my bad days, especially on nights I couldn't sleep. What was I going to do now?

Seth walked over to me and sat beside me. He wrapped his arms around my shoulder, pulling me to his side. I gave in and cried until I fell asleep in my brother's arms. When I came to, I was lying in bed with a muscular body pressed against my back. When I tried to wiggle out of Seth's grasp, his arms tightened around my waist. Only it was not Seth.

It was Ricky.

"What are you doing?" I asked, shocked he was in bed with me.

"You fell asleep, so Seth put you to bed," he replied in a tired voice.

"No, I mean, what are you doing in my bed?"

"I climbed into your window to make sure you were okay," he whispered against my neck and wrapped his arms around my waist.

What was happening?

This was so wrong and confusing.

I wiggled out of his grasp, and this time he let me. I swung my legs over the bed, walked toward my desk near the window, and tapped the touch lamp.

"I'm sorry," he whispered as he sat up on the bed. "I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."

"I know."

Ricky’s pained set of eyes locked on me, but I averted my gaze. I couldn't stand the pity that swirled in his ocean-blue eyes. As if he could sense my uneasiness, he moved off the bed and walked toward me. He grabbed his hat from my desk and placed it over his tapered buzz cut. He moved closer and pulled me in for a hug, and I welcomed it by wrapping my arms around his waist.

My tears were flowing freely as I spoke up, "I just don't understand why she would do something so cruel."

"Sometimes, people do things that don't make sense. But that doesn't excuse what she did," Ricky said firmly.
