“Couldn’t tell, with his face smashed in.” Storm turned us away. “I’m willing to bet Ella crushed his face with the boulder. She was covered in splatters of blood.”

“I’m sure she did.”

“See? She’s in the fires of hell, trying to get out, but she’s stuck because her son is missing.”

“Again, all because of me.”

“I know exactly where you’re at, Rocky. I have been where you are, believing you’re no good for anyone, that all you’ll do is cause harm. But I’m here to tell you, you can change. You can be the man your girl and son deserve.”

“I don’t know.”

“Yes, you do. You want them. You love them, don’t you?”

“Yes.”

“Then fuckin’ fight for them, brother. Don’t pussy out. Don’t give up because your woman says some hurtful shit when she’s out of her mind. You’ve got Knight blood in you. We don’t walk away from our woman.”

“Oh yeah? David did. He kicked my mom to the curb and didn’t give a shit about me.”

“Every family has a bad apple. His brother, Matt, was the good brother—the man we all endeavor to be like. He’s the Knight to emulate. Don’t go be like our father because it’s easier. Nothing good is easy, Rocky.”

“And where is Matt, the good Knight?”

“He’s dead. Died of cancer over a decade ago.”

“Shit. What kind of cancer?” I touched my head where my tumor was at. Did cancer run in the Knight family?

“Colon. If Matt were here, he’d tell you the same things I’m saying. To fight for your woman and child.”

The Knights were not how I’d imagined. Storm was direct and didn’t seem to be bullshitting me. He spoke highly of his uncle and not of his dad… my dad.

“Storm, we need to get this scene cleaned up,” one of the bikers said. “You should call Grizzly.”

“Yeah.” Storm took out his phone. “Hero’s my SAA and can be bossy. I’ll just be over here if you need anything.”

Being surrounded by Knights cleaning up my mess was more than a little staggering and humbling. To know that the president of a notorious and respected club shared the same blood as me was also mind-blowing.

I wasn’t behaving like a leader, a president of the Hell’s Bells. Xabier was still with his younger brother, and I hadn’t done anything to support my friend. My woman was beside herself, with another man consoling her, and I was outside, lamenting my fucked-up life. I should be searching for my son and bringing him home to his mother.

I took in the rickety trailer house and hated myself for their living conditions. They wouldn’t stay another night in this place. I went back inside to check on Ella.

“Can I help you?” Boxer asked. He was blocking the hallway entrance, his arms crossed and chest out. Clearly, he was a weightlifter with his football-sized biceps.

“I’m checking on my woman.”

Boxer’s ice-blue eyes bore into mine. “She’s fine. Tomcat is taking care of her.” It was then I heard the shower running.

“He’s in the bathroom with her?”

“Yes.”

“Move the fuck out of the way.”

“No can do. She let him take her in and asked me not to let you pass.”

“Do you have a wife, an old lady?”

“Yes.”
