I was done following his rules and letting him control me. Any respect I’d once had for him was gone. From now on, I would live my life the way I wanted.

“Are you ready?” Rocky reached for the doorknob of the clubhouse.

Loud music thumped from inside and vibrated the ground. A line of bikes was parked in the front. Neon lights glowed from behind the blinds in the windows. I suspected I was about to enter a debauchery…

Was I ready? No. But I’d never admit I was scared out of my mind. “Yes.”

“You’ll see all kinds of fuckery. If you’re not ready, I’ll get us a room at a motel.”

I lifted my gaze to his. “You’d spend money on me?” Butterflies danced in my stomach. Until now, we hadn’t gone anywhere together in public. No movies, dinner dates, or walks in the park, holding hands. We’d been hiding from my parents and the world. I hated it, but I couldn’t do anything to change our situation. Rocky was older and a bad-boy biker. Even if I could manipulate my dad, my mother would never approve. The mere fact that he would spend money on me like we were a couple, boyfriend and girlfriend, made me feel giddy.

He pushed me against the door, planted his hands on either side of my head, and caged me in. “Obviously, I’ve failed to show you how much you mean to me.” His brows deepened, gray eyes narrowing. “Do you think I take other chicks to our spot? Spend hours upon hours under the stars holding them in my arms like I do you? Is that what you think?” he growled, smashing his forehead against mine. “Fuck, I suck at this.”

“We’ve only been together for a little more than a month. I didn’t mean to insult you.” My throat constricted. I hadn’t wanted to make him angry. Not that I thought he’d hurt me physically. I just didn’t know how he’d react when mad. “You don’t come across as…” I wasn’t sure what to call him.

“A one-woman guy? Every chick’s dream guy? Is that it, Ella? Am I your pitstop in the gutter?” he yelled in my face. “Your taste of dirty before you dump me for Mr. Fucking Perfect?” The hard lines in his face bulged as he lost it.

“Rocky, I didn’t mean it like that.” My stomach twisted into knots.Nice going, Ella. I’d effectively set him off, on a night that was supposed to have been special, one I’d remember for the rest of my life. Welp, I definitely wouldn’t forget the look of outrage on Rocky’s face. “We’re still new. How was I to know—”

“I have never treated any girl like I have you. And what for? For you to piss on it!” He backed away from me. The hurt in his eyes slayed me. “Go home, Ella. I won’t let you go slumming any longer.”

“No!” I grabbed him by the wrist. “I don’t want to go anywhere. I’m not slumming it. I want to be with you, Rocky!”

“I’m not good enough.” He whipped his hand out of mine. “I don’t know what I thought when I set my sights on you. Maybe stupidly thinking your goodness would rub off on me.” He squeezed his head between his hands and screwed up his face, like his words had given him extreme pain. “But I’ll always be a fucking Jones and a member of Hell’s Bells. That’s never gonna change, not even for you. So leave!”

“No!”

He got in my face. “Run, Ella. Fucking run for your life before I destroy you.” He pushed me away. I wasn’t sure where this rage had come from or why he wouldn’t listen to me. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I was scared. “I said run!”

I whirled around and bolted toward the frontage road. Town was at least four miles away, but I’d run long-distance track. I could make it home on my own. It’d probably take me an hour since I was out of shape. Maybe longer.

The dark inky sky appeared ominous, like it wanted to hurt me for some reason. If I knew what I’d done wrong or said to set Rocky off, I’d try to make it right and apologize for my mistakes.

But I didn’t know if I wanted to be with him anymore, after he’d blown up at me without telling me why he was so angry. That wasn’t okay with me.

My lungs burned as I inhaled the crisp fall air, and my feet ached in my boots. I could already feel blisters forming on the back of my heels, a reminder that I’d bought them half a size too big.

“Ella!” Rocky shouted from behind me.

I picked up my speed and pushed harder to distance myself more. Now I was pissed and didn’t want to talk to him. Seriously, how dare he tell me to leave? To run for my life? Yeah, nothing messed up about that.

It was frustrating how it appeared he’d changed his mind and wanted to talk. He was freaking confusing me.

“Stop! I’m sorry!”

Tears streamed down my face, but I didn’t let up on the gas. I didn’t deserve to be yelled at or made to feel as though I thought I was better than him. It wasn’t like that at all. In fact, he felt more like me than my own family did.

The sound of his boots pounding the dirt road grew louder. Crap, he was catching up to me. I worked my arms, moving them back and forth fiercely, giving everything I had to give me a leg up. But the guy was faster than I’d realized.

“Goddammit, Ella. Stop!” Swiftly, strong arms wrapped around me. We stumbled and fell to the ground on the side of the road. Rocky landed on his back with me on top of him, then rolled, putting me under him.

“Get off me!” I screamed, kicking my legs and pushing him away.

“Baby, I’m sorry. I’m so fucking sorry.” He pressed me against the ground and buried his face in the crook of my neck. “Don’t go. Don’t leave me.”

“I can’t with you, Rocky. Get. Off. Me.”

“Will you just listen to me?”
