“You’re both the very best.” I teared up as I went back to the kitchen. Rockson’s popcorn had stopped popping long ago.

“So what’s your plan? What are you thinking? Are you afraid of Rocky? Afraid he’ll hurt you?”

Again, so many questions.

“My plan is to feel out the situation. I’d prefer to leave Scornrock as a free woman than you helping me escape the club in the dead of night with my child in tow. Things could get out of control and dangerous that way.”

“I suppose it could, but honey, if you want out of that town, we’ll get you out.”

“Thank you. Just talking about it helps.”

“I’m glad.”

“He seems different. Rocky, I mean.”

“How so?”

“One second, it’s like he hardly knows me, then a second later, he does.”

“That’s strange. Any idea what it could be? Drugs maybe?”

“It could be drugs. His mother was an addict, but wouldn’t he have crazy eyes? Or have erratic behavior?”

“Yes, there would be some signs.”

“See, he seems the same yet still different. I can’t explain it.” Perhaps I was imagining things. It’d been a really long time since I’d been with Rocky. I’d changed, and he must have too.

“Is my snack ready?”

I whirled around. “It’s right here, buddy. Mommy got distracted by the phone.” I quickly poured half the bag into a bowl and handed it to him. “I’ll bring your juice.”

He smiled, took his snack, and scurried away.

“Sorry. I was getting some popcorn for Rockson.” I grabbed a juice pouch from the fridge, took it to Rockson’s room, and handed it to him. I dropped a kiss on his head and returned to the kitchen to get myself a snack, a liquid snack in the form of a beer.

“Of course, tend to your baby. I miss him already.”

“He misses you and Landon too.”

“I’m worried about both of you. Just say the word, and we’ll be there by suppertime.”

“We’ll be fine. Tomcat is watching over us. He won’t let anything bad happen.” I worried my bottom lip between my teeth. Unless Rocky lost it on Cade… I recalled the first time I’d gone to the clubhouse with Rocky; he had killed three members in cold blood. He was capable of anything, but I was confident he wouldn’t hurt me or my child.

“Just call me if you change your mind. You can count on us.”

“Thank you so much, Lydia. Please don’t tell Mona anything. I know she’ll tell Vegas.”

“Don’t worry. I know my sister has a big mouth. Why do you think the guys love her? Her big mouth makes her a primo cock sucker.” She giggled, and so did I.

“That’s so true. Apparently, I don’t give good head. Not that I’m complaining. Some of those guys are gross.”

“I hope I’m not gross.” Tomcat snaked his arms around my waist and kissed my neck. I sagged against him, enjoying his attention. I needed support and had so few people I could count on.

“Sounds like you have a visitor,” Lydia said. “I’ll let you go, but call me anytime.”

“I will. Just be ready.”

“You betcha. Bye, honey.”
