“Will you sing to me now?”
“Absolutely.”Once she’s under the covers, I lay beside her and cuddle her in tight.
I’d written a song just for her while I was away.Chloe is just drifting off as I finish.“I love you, Daddy.”
“I love you, too, Chloe.Sweet dreams.”
Her little smile as she settles in to sleep never fails to make me feel like a proud and happy dad.
I kiss her forehead and am surprised to see Erin standing in the doorway.

“Hey,”Mick whispers as he takes my hand and leads me down the hall to our room.“I thought you were going to meet me in bed.”
“I was, but then I heard you singing something new.It’s lovely.You wrote that for her?”
“I did.”
“If I wasn’t already madly in love with you, that would have done it.”
“Erin…” He points to the bed.“Would you sit down, please?”
His voice is a little shaky and he sounds nervous.
As soon as I sit on the bed, he pulls something from his pocket and crouches in front of me.
“Before I do this, I want you to know that I asked Chloe for her permission.Will you marry me?”
“You asked Chloe first?”
“I did.And she said yes.There’s more, but you haven’t given me your answer yet.”
“Yes.Of course, yes.”
He kisses me hard, then holds out his hand.In it is a small blue velvet box.“If you don’t like it, we can get something different.”
I open the box to the most exquisite ring.A gorgeous blue sapphire set in a band of Celtic love knots.
“I love it.You remembered that sapphires are my favourite.”I hold out my finger and Mick slides the ring on.It’s a perfect fit.
“I bought it fifteen years ago.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You left England the day before I was going to propose.”
“And you kept it with you all that time?”
“Deep down, I guess I wasn’t ready to let go.”
“I’m glad you didn’t.You said there’s more?”
“I asked Chloe if I could adopt her and be her dad.I realize I probably should have run that by you first, but?—”
“No.I think you did it exactly right.You’re already her dad in all the ways that count.Making it official gives her an extra layer of security.And since we’re making family decisions, I want at least one more baby.”
“Me too.But I want us to be married first.”
“That’s a little old fashioned of you,” I tease.
“I want everything settled with you, me, and Chloe before we add any babies.”
“Then I guess we’d best go for sooner than later.What do you think about New Year’s Eve?”
“Perfect.Now let’s see about making that baby.”
