“Well, that changes today.” He reaches over for his phone and starts texting.

“Sofia will kill me.” She’s very strict when it comes to her regimens.

“Who pays Sofia?” Looking up from his phone, he gives me a playful smile.

“Me.” My lips purse at the realization.

“Exactly, which means that you are going to do something for yourself for once.”

“What exactly do you have in mind?”

“Cliff jumping.” He gives me a wide, mischievous smile.

“Finally, someone who’s fun in this house!” Cleo says while throwing her hands up. “Let’s leave in an hour.”

I turn my head in Xavier’s direction. His eyebrows rise, and excitement crosses his features. I guess we’re going cliff jumping.

Chapter11

“We are not going to fit in that.” Cleo points at my small Mini Cooper.

“Where exactly are we going?” I ask him.

“La Quebrada,” he responds.

Horrified, I turn around to my sisters. Cleo is holding in a laugh, and Chanel’s face says it all.

“Absolutely not,” I tell him, and Cleo breaks out in laughter.

“Why?” Xavier is completely oblivious.

Cleo’s laughter dies down as she decides to add to the conversation. “Well, becauseLa Quebradais cliff diving for professionals. It’s iconic around here because the divers who go up risk their lives. If we were to possibly get up the rocks, we would jump off a cliff at a hundred and twenty feet into the air and fall within the highest tide in Acapulco. Adding the fact that you have to rock climb up to the platform because there’s no entrance. On top of that, it’s tradition for all the divers. Their family used to jump, so now they do and so on. Last time I checked, we aren’t part of that family legacy.” Cleo pats him on the back.

Xavier’s face morphs into a hint of confusion but also sadness. “That was the only place I could find.” He shrugs in our direction.

“Don’t worry, I’ve been coming here since I was twelve and snuck out a bunch of times. I know a cliff about twenty minutes away,” Cleo says.

I give her a look. She doesn’t even seem fazed by the authoritative glare.

When Xavier said that he wanted to go cliff jumping, I stilled internally and hoped Cleo or Chanel, who are very aware that I’m scared of heights, would intervene. But they failed to do so.

Cleo was all for it, and Chanel didn’t say a word.

The thought of jumping off a cliff that leads into the ocean with rocks around me reminds me of death.

So now we’re all trying to fit into my Mini Cooper to drive twenty minutes away, to remind me why I don’t like this idea.

“Chanel and Cleo, you’re in the back,” I tell them.

“Nope, my claustrophobia does not accept that statement,” Chanel says behind me.

“Well, it’s either that or you’re in the trunk, which is smaller.”

With a grunt, she pushes Cleo ahead of her. The driver’s seat hits the wheel with the pull of the lever on the side of the seat. Cleo attempts to get in, but she’s taking too long, much to Chanel’s distaste. Chanel puts her hands on Cleo’s vibrant blue locks to push her head in.

“Ow, pendeja, mi pelo!” Cleo’s discomfort is clear as Chanel keeps pushing her in. Xavier is most likely toppled over in laughter at this image; Chanel tries to push her in with more force and puts one leg on the car.
