Where, at the top, Luna stood in a sparkly red gown that draped around her body like a glitzy ribbon on a package, hugging every perfect inch of her curves in elegance and grace. Her hair was swept over one shoulder, tickling her exposed collarbone and accentuating her eyes.

Which were the center of her look, drawn up with smoky black shadow and eyelashes that would give any teenage boy a wet dream.

She looked like a goddess. I’d never seen anything more beautiful in my life. She deserved to strut around this place like she owned it, yet she looked around with those timid eyes, gazing at the crowd as if worried she didn’t belong.

I wanted to take her hand and reassure her this wasexactlywhere she belonged—right here, in my home, by my side. In my eyes, this stubborn, infuriating, argumentative woman was perfectly imperfect, and I wouldn’t change that in any way.

Alexander sighed in disapproval, but he was polite enough to say nothing more. Maybe he could tell by the way I was staring at Luna that she wouldn’t be going anywhere. No matter what.

Unable to break my stare, I moved through the crowd toward the staircase.

“Holy crap.” Brody Miller stopped me, slapping my back like we were friends.

I hated Brody Miller. Known for his DUIs that his senator father always helped him get out of, the guy did more drugs than a band on a world tour. Slept with more women, too, and had even fathered two children who he never bothered to meet. He was too busy trying to weasel out of child support, even though the DNA proved he was responsible for them.

The guy was so narcissistically into himself, he never fathomed that I hated his guts, no matter how many times I’d tried to make it clear.

Brody’s gaze slid over Luna, lingering a touch too long on her curves, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “I’m going to have to hit that, bro.”

A blazing rage ripped through my spine and wrapped around my ribs.

I grabbed Brody’s shoulder. Hard.

“If you go anywhere near her”—I smiled—“I’ll break your legs.”

He laughed. Until he looked in my eyes and realized I was dead serious.

I shoved him off and walked toward Luna, who had yet to spot me.

It wasn’t just Brody that upset me. It was the thought of any other man touching her. It banged against my bones so hard, it felt like they’d break under the mere idea of it.

Luna’s eyes met mine, and damn if time didn’t cease to exist. She held my gaze as I slowly walked up the staircase, one agonizing step at a time.

“Everyone’s staring,” she whispered, biting her lip.

She was trying to hide it, but nervousness flickered through her eyes as she looked down at the great room. But what she didn’t realize was, in the sea of people who filled my house, there was only one that I cared about right now. One that I wished I could have for my own.

“I’m warning you, Luna, if you want to stay just friends, you’re going to have to wear a different dress.”

CHAPTER25

Luna

“You look stunning.” Hunter’s tone was low and seductive.

“You look…devastatingly handsome. I can see what the blogs are so worked up about.”

But it was almost like Hunter didn’t hear my compliment, lost in a potion of drinking me in.

“Do me a favor and stay close to me tonight.”

Of course I would. But…

“Why?”

“You’re the most gorgeous woman here, which means every single man will want you.”

When he stared at me, something passed between us, my thread of resistance beginning to fray.
