She’d been right, which also made her grin. Aero was turning her into a lovesick puppy, and she didn’t even mind.

“Hey, guys,” Molly said, strolling into the kitchen and preparing her coffee.

She leaned back against the counter, sipping her coffee and watching Aero intently.

“Hi,” Sam said. “This is Aero. Aero, this is Molly.”

“Nice to meet you,” he said, nodding at the woman. While they’d had several rather awkward encounters, they hadn’t been formally introduced.

“You too,” Molly said, inspecting him.

Molly was tall and thin, with short, spiky dark hair. She was average-looking, in Aero’s opinion, and had several silver piercings in her nose, lips, and ears. Molly was different from Sam, and Aero wondered how well they got along as roommates.

“So.” Molly smiled. “What’s your deal?”

“Excuse me?” Aero asked, locking eyes with Molly, who returned his stare.

“Molly.” Sam interrupted, placing a hand on Aero’s thigh.

“I don’t know.” Molly looked him in the eye. “There’s something about you.”

“Like what?” Aero asked, standing and glaring at Molly. His hackles were up, and he was on the defensive, wedging himself between the counter and Sam.

“You’ve got a serial killer vibe, dude,” Molly said, flicking her gaze at Sam, who looked horrified. “You have untrustworthy features. Eyebrows are pointed, and you’ve got a subtle but constant frown. Would you say you have superficial charm or a grandiose sense of self-worth?”

“Molly!” Sam shouted.

“I gotta go,” Aero said, setting his mug on the counter with a thunk and heading for the door.

“Aero, no.” Sam followed him, reaching for his hand.

He spun to face her. “I don’t like your roommate.”

Sam nodded, her cheeks heating with shame. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s all right,” he sighed.

Tears sprung into Sam’s eyes. “Please, don’t leave.”

Aero stopped abruptly, her tears breaking through his anger. It killed him to see her upset, especially when it wasn’t her fault.

“Don’t cry, Sammy,” he said, pulling her into his arms and holding her tight. “I’m not going anywhere.”

She let out a whimper, and he couldn’t take it. Aero rubbed her back, her face buried in his chest, as he shushed her.

“It’s okay,” he said. “Do you wanna come see me later?”

Sam nodded.

“All right.” He tipped her face up. “I’ll call you.”

“Okay,” Sam said, her heart sinking slightly.

Aero stared at her with intense green eyes, pressing a kiss to her forehead before turning around and leaving the house.

Sam listened to his truck rumble to life, then fade. Anger flared inside her, making the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. She spun toward the kitchen and stomped back toward Molly.

“What the hell was that?” Sam demanded, planting her hands on her hips.
