Chapter 17

“Good morning,” Aero said, his green eyes soft and warm as he looked at Sam.

“Morning.” Sam yawned, gazing at him from her pillow. “How’d you sleep?”

“Really well, you?” he asked, taking in her pretty face and tangle of brown hair against the white sheets.

“Good. I think the flights wore me out.”

“Are you too tired to go to the beach?” Aero cocked a brow, and Sam shook her head.

“Nope. Coffee, then beach,” Sam said, making him laugh.

They got out of bed, got dressed in their swimsuits and flip-flops, then went in search of caffeine.

At noon, the sun was high overhead, and the seagulls were squawking as they swooped over the beach, searching for discarded food.

Sam was stretched out on a towel, her teal one-piece showing off her legs while maintaining her modesty. Aero couldn’t help but gawk when she’d removed her crocheted cover-up. Her hair was piled on her head in a messy bun, and sunglasses were perched on her nose.

“The beach agrees with you,” Aero murmured, running his finger along the strap of her bathing suit.

Sam chuckled, looking up at him. He’d been seated beside her on his towel, reading a book through his sunglasses. His black swim trunks hung low on his hips, and he was shirtless, the sunlight glinting off his muscles and his tattoo.

“You make the beach look good.” Sam winked, making him laugh.

“Wanna go for a swim?”

Pushing to their feet, they walked hand in hand, winding their way down to the water’s edge.

Sam walked into the waves up to her knees and stopped.

Aero released her hand and dove into the water, slipping beneath the waves and emerging a few feet away. He grinned at her, splashing her with the saltwater, making her yelp in surprise.

“It’s cold.” Sam smiled as he approached her, wrapping his arms around her.

“Don’t be a wimp,” Aero teased, the cold water dripping from him soothing her hot skin.

“You’re a wimp.” Sam stuck her tongue out at him, and he grinned, leaning down to kiss her deeply.

Sam melted, her chest feeling light as she soaked up Aero’s carefree demeanor.

It was rare to see him so relaxed and at ease. It made her heart flutter happily. She couldn’t help but wonder if revealing his secrets, the ones he’d held onto so tightly for so long, was allowing him to loosen up and have the fun he’d denied himself.

“Sammy,” Aero rasped, gripping her hips and tugging her closer.

“Hmm?”

“Don’t hate me, okay?” he whispered in her ear, and her eyes popped open.

“What do you—” she began, but her words turned into a squeal as Aero lifted her and rushed forward, carrying her into the water up to his shoulders.

Sam shrieked at the cold but tossed her head back and laughed loudly, gripping Aero’s shoulders as they bobbed in the waves.

Aero wrapped Sam’s legs around his waist and held on tight, the sound of her laughter making his chest feel warm and tight. It was a beautiful sound, one he could get used to hearing every single day for the rest of his life.

“You’ll pay for that,” Sam murmured, wrapping her arms around him and kissing him softly.

“Is that a threat?” Aero asked, dragging his lips across her cheek and kissing the skin beneath her ear.
