He chuckles at that, taking a bite, and I wait for a moment. His expression is hard to read, and I frown. “It’s bad, isn’t it?”

“It’s great,” David manages, taking a sip of the cocoa, and I make a face at him.

“You promised never to lie to me again.”

“Well—I’m sure if you keep practicing—” He chokes down another bite, and I glare at him, pushing the plate out of the way.

“You don’thaveto eat it. Anyway, I have another surprise for you.” I reach for Marcia, lifting her up. “I’m going to give her to the nanny, and then I’ll show you. Just come upstairs when you’re done with your cocoa.”

Fifteen minutes later, Marcia is safely ensconced in her nursery, and I see David headed up the stairs. I reach for him the moment he’s on the landing, kissing him softly. “You taste like cocoa,” I tell him, and he wraps an arm around my waist, pulling me closer.

“You’re welcome to taste as much as you like,” he murmurs, and I laugh.

“Come with me.” I take his hand, leading him down the hall to a door just down from our master suite. I push it open, walking inside with him in tow, and turn to face him as he takes it in.

“What is this?” David turns around, looking at the room. The walls are painted a pale yellow, a hooked rug on the gleaming wooden floor in the pattern of a sun, with white wainscoting all the way around. It’s already set up as a nursery—a white crib with yellow bedding and a soft chair on one side, shelves and drawers neatly arranged on the other. “Amalie—”

“Our house is the perfect blend of us both now,” I murmur, reaching for him. “And I wanted to make sure you didn’t see this room until it was entirely finished. Marcia should have her own room, I think. And in about eight months—”

David’s eyes widen. “Are you—”

I nod, my own eyes filling with tears. “This one planned for,” I whisper, and he reaches for me before I can even fully finish the sentence, holding me against him as he kisses me, long and slow and deep.

“This is everything I could want,” he whispers against my mouth, and when he pulls back, I can see how much this means to him. “You choosing a room in the house that you wanted to be special—you helping the way you have—another baby…Amalie, this is everything.You’reeverything. I’m so grateful you’re my wife.” He kisses me again, his fingers threading through my hair, and I feel tears slip down my cheeks without meaning for them to. Tears of happiness—because once upon a time, I would never have known things could be this good. “I’m so grateful you stayed.”

“So am I.” I lean up on my tiptoes, kissing him again, breathing in the scent of his cologne and warm skin, desire flooding me as I press myself closer to him. “I love you.”

“And I love you.” He backs me up towards the chair, sitting down as he pulls me into his lap. “And I’m never going to let you go.”

“I’ll never ask you to.” I sink down atop him, taking his face in my hands. “I’m yours, David. Forever.”

After all,I think, as he kisses me and I reach for the buttons of his shirt, lost in desire,it was always meant to be.We were always meant to find each other.

And now, our future is everything we could ever want it to be.
