“It’s King-8 Queen-9 then?” she asks, resuming the scorecard, adding a point for herself. Yes, she won. I lost the patience, and despite being on the winning side, I couldn’t control myself and finish the game.

“Take all the points you want, baby. They are yours. I am yours.”

She is about to respond when I rub my face in the crook of her neck and place an open-mouthed kiss on her skin, nibbling every inch of her neck. Her giggles subside and are replaced by soft moans. Meher quickly pulls my face away and kisses my lips instead. I kiss her back. No, I don’t kiss her; I devour her. I was starving for her.

I don’t know who between us starts to strip the rest of the clothes first. I don’t even realise when my fingers knead her sensitive breasts and when they slide down to plunge into her wetness. I begin to work her up with my fingers, slicing in and out into her depths to bring her the joy of fulfillment. I continue my ministrations until I hear her screaming my name in the throes of passion and biting my shoulder blade. Her entire body shudders beneath my hands. I know I’m going too fast. But tonight, I can’t take it any slower. My need is too raw, too intense, unlike the rest of the time. Without a delay or a warning, I sheath myself and ram deep inside her.

We are lost in the rhythm as our bodies slap against each other, wanting to draw out everything we have to give the other. Love, pain, and most importantly, the solace that we seek only in each other’s arms. With a final powerful thrust, the room echoes with my primal roar as I empty myself inside her. My heavy breaths match hers as I fall on the bed next to her and pull Meher towards me. Her face has a look of satisfaction with a mix of exhaustion, making it appear like she is ready to sleep for days after tonight’s lovemaking. And yet, minutes after we clean up, we are ready for round two. Tonight is all about the king and the queen’s burning desires for each other. Though we are surrounded by important questions regarding the dark and the mysterious secrets, tonight, every other thought can wait while the king and the queen quench their passion.

Saturday

It’s a masquerade party at ‘The Roost’ tonight. The party is exclusively organised every month for the members of the club who hold VIP status. Every registered member receives a brown or blue eye mask with the symbol of bats at their respective addresses, along with the party invitation. Krish’s intel has a source working inside this pub, and he managed to get his hands on this invitation and a mask for me. Tonight, I’m going to confront Raghav, who tried to break the foundation of the Shergills and Walias with his mysterious gifts.

“I’ve got a bad feeling about this.” Meher’s voice pulls me away from my preparations. I’m at home, getting ready for the all-important night ahead.

I turn around as she approaches, holding the dark brown bat mask.

“Is it absolutely necessary to confront Raghav inside that pub?” she inquires. “That place is his den, Ayaan, and you’re going in solo. Krish and his team will be stationed outside. What if things go wrong inside?”

I understand her concern.

“Even if something goes wrong in there, don’t you think your king is capable enough to handle the last-minute googlies?”

“Can you, for once, not be so overconfident?” she retorts, rolling her eyes. I loop my arm around her waist, pulling her closer.

“I don’t rely on overconfidence, Meher. I trust my intuition, and it’s telling me that I can handle this, no matter what unfolds inside.”

She swallows nervously, handing me the eye mask.

“Why are they so fixated on bats? Even their previous gifts featured the same emblem, didn’t they?”

I nod as I inspect the mask myself.

“That’s precisely what I need to find out. But one thing is clear. Anyone associated with this Bat emblem is dangerous, as they are part of this gang.”

Meher swallows nervously, then grips my arm.

“I hope you find the answers you are looking for. Come back soon.”

“I’ll be okay. Please stop worrying.” I place a gentle kiss on her forehead.

“Can I come with you? Please,” she begs. “Just like the last time in Dehradun? I can help you, Ayaan. I’m capable, and I’ve done it before. Please take me with you.”

“I know you can. But not tonight. You’ll slow me down, Meher,” I reply. “Besides, this mission is unlike the one we did together in Dehradun, to retrieve Tripathi’s wife’s phone. It’s dangerous and the only lead we have. I can’t risk your safety or afford to miss this chance.”

“I can’t risk your safety either, my King,” she scolds me, cupping my face. “At least let me accompany you to the pub. I’ll remain outside with Krish.”

“No,” I retort firmly this time. “I want you to stay at home. I’ll contact you once I’m finished in there. If you need to relay any message, just call or message Krish. He’ll communicate with me via my earpiece immediately. Alright?”

Meher isn’t convinced or happy, but she finally nods, giving up on her resolve.

“Fine. But I have a warning for you,” she says, gently gripping the lapels of my black suit and drawing me closer.

Warning? I wonder what it might be, but she reveals it herself.

“If a woman makes a pass at you over there or even tries to touch you, you are aborting the mission and coming straight home to your queen. Got it?”
