“Where do you think you are going?” he asks Krish, a bit confused.

“Uncle, I have to go to Austria for a few days as a few urgent commitments have come up. But I’ll be back before Ayaan’s wedding.” He glances at me, and I nod in understanding.

“Buddy, youhaveto be back before the wedding. No excuses,” I repeat authoritatively.

“I will, Ayaan, don’t worry,” he replies and turns back to Dad. “Uncle and I are going to wear matching sherwani at your wedding. And I’d be a fool to miss out on all the fun.”

Dad and Bhaskar uncle both laugh at Krish’s idea of twinning their outfits at my wedding. It reminds me that I have scheduled trials for the groom’s outfit at Simran’s boutique in two weeks. After accepting my marriage proposal, Meher immediately informed Simran about the wedding and gave her preferences and measurements for the lehenga. Following suit, I shared my measurements shortly after. With the wedding approaching quickly, we want everything to go smoothly, so we’ll be going for the fittings in two weeks to ensure our D-day outfits are perfect. The best part is that Simran has thoughtfully invited Meher for her bridal outfit trial on the same day as mine, giving me another chance to see my queen before our marriage.

Krish speaks to Dad for a bit before turning to me.

“I’ve told the security guards that no one from the Shergill family will leave the house without them. That includes you, buddy. Please do not do a disappearing act again.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m not used to having guards follow me around. You know that, Krish.”

Frustrated, Krish retorts, “Why do you always want to increase my work? Even in Austria, I had asked you to keep a guard with you, but you didn’t agree. That’s why the abductors came so close to you.”

Dad hears the words ‘abductors’and panics.

“Abductors? What…what are you saying? Someone tried to kidnap Ayaan? He never told me anything about this. When did this happen?” Dad demands to know, his expression full of worry.

Krish and I realise we just spilled the beans. Neither of us had told Dad about my encounter with the stalkers who tried to abduct me in Austria.

“Ayaan, tell me. What are you hiding?” Dad implores, urging us to tell him everything.

“Dad, it’s nothing.”

“Don’t you lie to me,” he scolds, trying to get down from the bed. I quickly go to him and make him lie back comfortably again.

“Alright, relax. This is why I didn’t tell you before. I knew you would worry unnecessarily, Dad.”

“Unnecessarily? Someone tried to kidnap my son. Of course, I am going to be concerned.”

“Uncle,” Krish comes forward. “You can rest assured that as long as I’m with Ayaan, no harm will come to him. Ayaan was targeted by some unidentified men bearing a bat-like emblem on their jackets. This happened the same day he was supposed to fly back to India.”

Dad goes speechless for a moment before he stutters, “Bat... Bat-like emblem?”

He looks visibly distressed hearing that, and there’s fear and confusion all over his face. Not wanting him to stress over it, I quickly assure him.

“Don’t worry, Dad. Everything is fine now. I dealt with them at that moment, and everything is under control.”

“How do you know it’s under control?” Dad snaps. “And how could you hide this important thing from me?”

“I’m sorry. It will never happen again. I promise.” I quickly apologise.

“Kailash,” Bhaskar uncle intervenes. “If you take too much stress, we’ll have to shift you back to the hospital. Have faith in your son. You know he can handle everything that comes his way. When he can make Pratap Walia dance to his tunes, he can do anything.”

Bhaskar uncle’s remark makes me smile, but Dad is still agitated.

“Uncle,” I look at Bhaskar uncle. “The doctors have recommended complete bed rest for Dad, so I am leaving his responsibility on you to monitor him closely and make sure he stays in his room and doesn’t try to get out of bed.”

“Sure,” Uncle nods in agreement. “I am going to enjoy babysitting Kailash,” he teases.

“Stop treating me like a baby,” Dad retorts. “It’s my son’s wedding, and I’m done resting. There are so many things to be done, and I want to help with the wedding preparations.”

I shake my head.

“That’s out of the question. You will only step out of the house on my wedding day, and that too only to participate in the rituals,” I firmly say, trying to put Dad’s concerns to rest. “Everything has been arranged. You don’t need to stress about anything.”
