Walking to his car, a powerful SUV parked at the street corner, he starts the engine. The deep growl of the engine pierces the night as he drives onto the road, following the mysterious white sedan.

CHAPTER 24

MEHER

As I step out of the trial room, my heart races with excitement and joy. I am in love with the exquisite wedding lehenga that Simran has designed for me. The rich colour, the intricate details, the way the fabric flows—it has exceeded my expectations. Simran’s talent has turned my wedding attire into a masterpiece of design, and I twirl around, feeling like a princess in a fairy tale after trying it on.

I head towards Devika bhabhi, who has been patiently waiting for me all this while. I feel sorry for making her wait for so long. She recently told me that her pregnancy mood swings have started to act out, making her hungry and in need of food every few hours. I hope Simran has taken care of her with some juice and light snacks while I was in the trial room. As I reach her, I’m startled to see Ayaan is still there.

“You’re still here?” I ask, surprised and secretly pleased by his presence.

He grins playfully.

“I’m here to drop you home safely.”

I roll my eyes, the corners of my lips curling into a smile.

“That’s not needed, Mr. Shergill. I have Vishnu to take me home. You don’t have to babysit me all the time.”

His tone takes a more serious note as he responds, “Vishnu has already left for somewhere. I don’t want to take any chances with your security. Your other guards might be capable, but I prefer not to take any risks.”

His words make my heart flutter, his protectiveness warming my heart, as usual. But I’m surprised by the news of Vishnu’s absence.

“Where did Vishnu go? He is not supposed to leave us alone.” I turn to Devika bhabhi.

She shrugs lightly, looking equally puzzled.

“He said he had some urgent work and left.”

Strange! Ayaan’s attention shifts from bhabhi back to me, his expression thoughtful. “I can trust Vishnu, but not your other guards, to take you back safely. That’s why I’m at your service, my queen.”

“Wow! Did the King just admit that he trusts the Rook?” I tease, curious to know what brought about this change. “Does that mean you are no longer insecure about him being around me all the time?”

Ayaan rolls his eyes and grabs my hand.

“Well, that all is about to change in a week, isn’t it? Don’t pin your hopes thinking I’ll allow Vishnu to come marching into the Shergill household with my Queen as though he’s some kind of a dowry gift from the Walia family.”

“Dowry,” I snap. “You are not asking for any dowry from my father. He’s already giving you a piece of his heart—his daughter.”

“And his daughter is my whole heart. I want only her, nothing else,” he instantly replies, making me forget my annoyance, and I swoon at the intensity of his words and his tone.

We share an intimate eye lock, and all my thoughts to argue further go down the drain. I am thrilled that Ayaan is dropping me home. That would give us some more time together, something I wholeheartedly crave.

“Shall we?” Ayaan asks again, checking his watch as though he’s pressed for time. He might have some plans after dropping me home. So, not wasting any more time, we bid goodbye to Simran, who promises to be by my side and dress me up on my wedding day. Then we all head outside.

The moment we are out, I am surprised to see Aksh bhai standing by his car, looking every bit the suave politician he is. Bhabhi is as surprised as I am, her usually expressive eyes hiding a mix of emotions. I can sense her desperation, her yearning for Aksh bhai as if she, too, longed to see him and is glad that he is here. But she masks her expressions and turns to me.

“How did he know I was here?” she asks.

Does she think I invited Aksh bhai here? No, I didn’t. I wouldn’t want to publicly put Aksh and bhabhi in an awkward situation.

Before I can utter a word, Ayaan’s voice breaks the tense silence, his words surprising us.

“I called him here.”

My eyes widen in astonishment, and my gaze shifts between him and Aksh. Why would Ayaan call Aksh here? Devika bhabhi and I both turn to look at Ayaan, our surprise evident on our faces.

“You called him?” I question, impressed by his initiative.
