I glance at him sideways and try to think of something to say.

“Thank you.”

“Yep. You can get out now.”

I open the car door with shaking fingers and step out onto the pavement. He drives off as soon as I close the door.

I stand on the street staring after the car; it doesn’t feel good being me right now. I don’t want Darion to hate me. I wonder why I care? It’s not like he cares about me.

“Hey, Missy!”

I turn, pushing a fake smile onto my lips, and open my arms to hug Elise.

“Come and see, you’re never going to believe it.”

Two hours later, sitting on the steps of the porch, I hate myself even more. My family is happy. So happy. Even Trin is more relaxed. We have never lived in a place as nice as this. Seb already enrolled them in a new school. Laptops, tablets, and clothing were waiting in each of their rooms. It was more perfect than I can even imagine.

But the cost.

That devastation in Darion’s eyes when he saw Trin. The fierce, defensive anger in Lukas at the pub. Seb’s silent disappointment when I fled from him. I try, but I really struggle to justify my actions. Especially when I think of what’s going to happen when my heat gets here.

Missy

I hold my silence, stewing in everything I’ve seen today. Lukas keeps glancing at me, but I refuse to meet his eyes, and when I think he’s about to speak, I reach out and turn the music up.

He drives us to the warehouse and parks. I climb out before he can ask me anything that might make me cry. He leads me in but touches my arm when I walk towards the office. I turn, and he indicates another door. He presses his thumb to a keypad, and the door opens. We climb a flight of stairs to a second door, and once again, he presses his finger to the pad, and it opens with a beep.

It’s all very high tech, modern sleekness with a deep charcoal colour scheme. One word comes to mind; alarming. I press my hand to my mouth. I just know I’m going to break something. The back wall is glass, with a huge garden on the other side. A kitchen with sleek, silver furnishings is to my left, a kitchen table and chairs to the right, while the rest of the open plan area is taken up with a bar, a huge entertainment area, and three massive couches. It’s sleek, it's modern, and it's incredibly expensive.

I did not know they had this much money.

After this morning, I should have guessed, but I didn’t…I didn’t think. Somehow, the knowledge that they are well off makes me feel even worse.

Lukas draws me in, though I don’t go far, too busy ogling the ceiling fan. Seb stands up from his seat at the kitchen table.

“Your family all settled?” he asks.

“Oh, um, yes. Thank you. They are…happy.” I look away, straight into the kitchen, where Darion glares into the fridge. When did he get there?

“And Trinity?” Seb asks cautiously. “Has she recovered?”

“Yes, she’s good now. Thank you for this morning.”

“What happened this morning?” Darion asks and slams the fridge shut, whirling to glare at the three of us.

“Trinity freaked out a bit,” Seb explains.

He stares at Seb, then glares at me.

“She’s fine now. It was just sudden and unexpected. She doesn’t do well with new now.” I explain and shrug self-consciously.

He grunts, turns, and stalks down a corridor that has squares of light shining down. My curiosity is tempered by the rage the alpha is spitting out.

Seb elbows me gently, and I turn back to him with burning cheeks.

“Sorry.”
