“No need to apologise. Let me give you the tour.” He turns around, and I suck in a startled breath. “So we have the kitchen and dining space here. Help yourself to anything. Um, the entertainment area. The remotes are on the table or just use the tablet.” He leads me through the house. Revealing a massive bathroom and pointing out the four bedrooms. Mine is at the back.

I have a bedroom.

I don’t know what I expected, but I hadn’t thought this far ahead.

He opens the door, and I stare. The room is gray. There’s not even a hint of colour on the comforter.

I should hate it.

I don’t. I kinda love it. It’s not a huge room, it’s small, and the bed takes up almost all the space. It’s cozy. My fingers itch to explore the fabric, touch it, put my scent on it.

“There’s a bathroom and walk in robes through that door,” Seb says quietly.

I peer around and see the door but don’t step into the room. It’s too nice. It’s too much. They shouldn’t be so nice to me. My eyes burn, and I swallow thickly.

“So, uh, you can decorate however you like. I’m sorry it’s so plain.”

“No, don’t. It’s…perfect.”

Seb scowls, looking over the space like it offends him. “We can change it.”

“No, really. I like it. Alot.”

“If you say so. I guess I’ll leave you to it. You must be tired. Need to change into something comfortable. We have to go out tonight, but not until late. I’ll come get you.”

“Okay,” I whisper. “Thanks.”

“Sure.”

He closes the door behind him, and I stand there for several minutes staring at the bed. I walk over to it and push on it gently, then sit on it.

Damn. The contract. I need to reread the contract. All of this is above and beyond what I expected. I think of Seb and Lukas’ anxious expressions as I studied their home. Is Darion really doing it for me, though? If he’s doing it for Trin, then I can’t fault him for that, either.

I scrub my face and stand up, pushing all the bad thoughts aside and walking into the bathroom. It’s nice. Nothing like the main bathroom, but it’s nicer than anything I’ve ever showered in before. I take a moment to explore the cabinets, finding everything I need.

I go into the robes and find it lined with clothes, and underneath the long dresses, my duffel bag and blankets.

I bite back my tears as I pull my blankets out and hug them to me. The scent of me, of home, is thick and grounds me faster than anything else does. I lean against the back wall of the robes and clutch my blankets like they can save me, while I stare into space. Elise and Muse saved up all their savings to get me one of these blankets.

Someone clears their throat, and I twist until I can see Lukas. He crouches down beside me and studies me for a long minute. It feels too much like I’m being assessed by a predator, so I hold perfectly still and study him back, memorising his white hair and intense green eyes.

There’s something unsure, something curious in him. Not all the time, but sometimes, when he lets his guard down, I see something different in him. Like now.

“The bed not good enough for you?” The tone is all wrong. It’s hostile like I’ve offended him.

I scowl at him. “That’s right, how dare you assholes give me a bed?”

He stares and then smirks. It changes the whole I’m-going-to-murder-you-and-examine-your-corpse vibe and makes him seem so much younger.

“So, kitten,” I snarl at the nickname, but he’s undeterred. “We’ve added all your details to the security and set you up with our Wi-Fi.”

“Thank you. How did you organise it all so fast?”

“Not sure. Darion organised it. He also registered you as an omega and your acceptance of our pack, so you belong to us.”

“You realise how threatening that came out, don’t you?”

“Uh-huh.” He laughs, and fuck me, the sound makes me want to crawl over to him and make it happen again.
