She’s still in school, Mr. Bardin. It’s 10 AM.

Exasperated, I try again:

And you? How are you?

I watch the three bubbles stop and start a few times before she responds.

I’m fine.Why do you ask?

I sigh out loud and ask myself why I’m being such an idiot.

Then I respond back:

Just wondering how you’re feeling.

She sends a quick response back:

Well, thank you for the concern :D

Gritting my teeth, I send the next text before I convince myself not to:

Joyce, how are you feeling about last Saturday night?

A long pause.

I don’t feel comfortable discussing this over text, Mr. Bardin.

I’ll wait for you to come home, okay?

I frown.

Okay,I’m forced to acquiesce.

Jake comes to discuss the matters of the day with me, but I am too distracted to pay attention to him.

“What’s wrong?” he asks, taking a seat across from me. “Memories got the best of you again?”

“Yes, but not the usual ones,” I say, shutting down my computer and getting ready to leave early.

“Oh, what is it now?” he puts his hands in the air, “If you don’t mind me asking, of course.”

I groan and shake my head, “they say a gentleman doesn’t tell, but you are not a gentleman, and I don’t feel much like one right now. I had—”

“Sex?” he completes my sentence. “Holy cow. You haven’t done that since...”

He coughs and I frown. He coughs again then continues, “Wow, this is huge. Who is this miracle woman?”

My frown is still there as I wave him off, “All I know is that I can’t get her out of my head and it’s driving me crazy.”

“It was that good?” Jake asks, a sly smile stamped on his face.

I facepalm, regretting telling Jake anything. But since I already dug the hole, I might as well keep on digging.

“It was good, Jake,” I say in an exhale. “She was very soft to the touch, and that’s all I’m going to say about her.”

“But did you call her?” he leans over the desk to get closer to me. “Please tell me you got her number!”

“I texted,” I say, “and she didn’t want to talk about us.”
