Of course!

Did you hear that more than 2200 officers signed a letter in support of Farnsworth?

I knew about the letter because I signed it, but that’s an amazing show of support. More than half of the department.

Agreed. We hope it helps.

See you Monday.

See you then.

So far, their weekend with the family had been great. Friday night had been about lasagna, board games and laughter. Sam and Nick sat up late into the night with Scotty, Eli, Candace, Angela, Tracy, Mike, Brooke and her boyfriend, Nate, who was on Eli’s Secret Service detail, but was off duty for the weekend with his girlfriend’s family.

Right after Brooke and Nate first arrived, Nate said, “Thank you for having me, Mr. President, Mrs. Cappuano.”

Nick had shaken his hand and said, “We’re Nick and Sam here, Nate.”

Nate’s eyes went wide. “I can’t.”

Everyone else had laughed.

“You must,” Nick had said.

“I told you.” Brooke had linked her arm with Nate’s. “If you’re gonna hang with my family, you can’t be a Secret Service agent.”

“I’ll, um, I’ll try, sir,” Nate had said.

“Try hard,” Nick had replied with a grin.

Freddie, Gonzo and the rest of the squad were at work cleaning up the paperwork on the case they’d closed in the early hours of that morning, so they wouldn’t make it to the beach. Nick and Sam had ended up with a smaller group than they’d planned on, which was fine.

They spent all day Saturday at the beach, enjoying the first warm weather of the season, followed by a bonfire with s’mores on Saturday night.

Sam got up early Sunday to read the reports Gonzo and Freddie had written on the Fortier and Bryant cases and still couldn’t believe the wild chain of events that had led to the arrest of Congressman Bryant and several others in his inner circle.

She was so absorbed in reading the twisted trail that had led to the congressman’s arrest that she didn’t hear Nick come up behind her or even know he was there until he kissed her neck and startled her.

“Morning,” he said. “I was sad when I woke up alone.”

“Sorry. Freddie texted me overnight to be on the lookout for reports that would tell an unbelievable story. He was right about that.”

“What happened?”

Sam gave him the highlights.

“I know Bryant from when I was in the Senate. That’s unbelievable.”

“Sure is. You know what else is unbelievable?”

“What’s that?”

“They’ve recovered nine bodies from Stahl’s yard so far, and they’re not done yet.”

“God, that’s awful. I’m sorry, Sam.”

“He’s like a nightmare that refuses to end. Freddie said the warrant for the storage unit finally came through, so they’ll be taking that on as soon as they get some sleep.”

“I’m glad you’re not there to have to deal with that.”

“I doubt they’d let me even if I was there.”

Her phone rang, and she took the call from Freddie. “Hey, I figured you’d be asleep by now.”

“Sam…”

“What? What’s wrong?”

“Tom Forrester has been murdered.”
