“There’s still one big piece missing.”

“Oh?” Her muscles trembled. Her skin zinged like it had three times as many nerves.

She knew what he was hinting at. And she already had her answer.

They’d both made mistakes. They’d handled this competition all wrong. But since he’d driven her to Maine, and maybe even before that, they’d been a true team, nothing like their first time together. And they’d made mistakes as a team. She wanted to believe they could fix them the same way.

“Can we try again?” His eyes caught hers. Pinned Allison in place. “I’ll do it right this time. I swear.”

She smiled. “The rule of threes, right?”

“I was so wrong that day I broke up with you at Brown. My life never could have started by leaving you behind. It began the day you walked… or… I guess danced… into it.”

Allison tossed his helmet aside and started tugging at his chest piece. “I think it’s time to get you out of this.”

“Before my jousting pole rises?”

Cackling, she slapped his arm. She’d hardly made any progress on the four hundred layers of tape he’d used when he swept her up into his arms.

And for the first time in her life, Allison Avery kissed a knight.
