“Allison?” Sophie stood in the doorway.

“Yeah?”

“I just want what’s best for you.”

Allison swallowed. “Even if it’s him?”

Sophie’s mouth puckered like she’d eaten an entire lemon, but she nodded. “I’m not going anywhere, even if I leave. You know that, right?” Her jaw trembled, like she was afraid of how Allison might respond. “Brain twins forever.”

Tears burned Allison’s eyes, and she failed to blink them away.“You know I want all the good things for you, right?” It was true, even if it hurt. Even if it meant everything had to change.

A smile tipped Sophie’s lips. A few tears of her own stole down her round cheeks. “We’re going to be great. Both of us.”

Allison wanted so badly to believe her.

By the time she got to her room, her phone was already in her hand.

Allison Avery: I wish you’d talk to me about whatever is going on.

She needed to stop keeping things in, to stop swallowing stuff down to avoid rocking the boat. If she’d told Sophie how she was feeling, if she’d spoken up about Colin, they wouldn’t have lost so much time together. And maybe, if Allison had opened up to Jed when she was younger, she wouldn’t have all these unresolved issues eating at her now.

She didn’t want Colin to be another item on the list of silences that hurt her.

She jumped when her phone buzzed in her hand.

Unknown Number: I know I’ve sucked the past few days. I’m sorry.

Allison Avery: What can I do?

Unknown Number: Bring your pom-poms tomorrow.

Allison Avery: You’re going to do your lecture?

Unknown Number: Of course.

Allison Avery: I thought maybe you weren’t up for it.

Unknown Number: It’s more important than ever.

Allison Avery: What does that mean?

Unknown Number: I’ll tell you about it tomorrow. I promise. After I get this lecture off my plate, I’ll tell you everything.

His words were cryptic. Ominous even. But at least he was talking.

Allison Avery: Okay.

Unknown Number: I love you.

Unknown Number: So much.

Allison Avery: I love you, too.

Tossing her phone on the bed, Allison dragged her laptop toward her. When you wanted answers, tomorrow could feel like an eternity, and too many thoughts were spinning through her head.

There was only one way to quiet that storm.
