“Cream and sugar?”

“Are you my waiter now?” she asked. He just stared at her until she sighed. “Just sugar. Two tablespoons.”

“I’ll be right back.”

“This is ridiculous, you know,” she called out to him as he returned to the kitchen. “I have a life, you know. You can’t just do this to me.”

But she didn’t try to leave the bedroom. He had a feeling that she was biding her time, waiting for an opportunity to leave without him stopping her. He’d returned to the bedroom with her coffee when there was a knock on the door.

Lexi ran, shoving past him to get to the door. He was caught by surprise and she managed to get to the apartment door. She flung it open to find Dmitri standing there.

“Whoah,” he said, staring at her in surprise.

Dmitri was a big guy, and his large frame took up the entire doorway. He didn’t move as Lexi tried to get around him, looking at Sam questioningly.

“Don’t let her go but don’t hurt her.”

Without needing further explanation, Dmitri moved into the apartment, forcing Lexi to take a step backward. He shut the door behind him and ran his eyes over Lexi, who was still only wearing one of his shirts. It fell to her upper thigh, and Sam didn’t like the appreciative look in Dmitri’s eyes.

“You have my lock?” he asked gruffly, moving to stand between Lexi and Dmitri, blocking his view.

“Yeah, boss.”

He held out a plastic bag and Sam took it. “That’ll be all. Go. You’ll need to take care of Nix’s job until I free him.”

Dmitri didn’t look pleased, but he didn’t argue. Turning back to Lexi, Sam expected her to be crestfallen at the thwarted escape attempt. Instead, she was staring at the bag in his hand with narrowed eyes.

“A lock?”

“Come on,” he said, jerking his head back toward the bedroom. “Your breakfast is getting cold.”

Lexi lingered for a moment, her eyes on the door of the apartment, but she seemed to realize that she wasn’t going to get anywhere with Sam watching her so closely. She marched back into the bedroom with her head held high, and he couldn’t help admiring the fact that she didn’t appear to fear him at all. Normally, he’d find that foolish, but he suspected that the truth of it was that she was brave.

And angry. He couldn’t forget that.

When she reached the bedroom, she sat at the foot of the bed as she ate her breakfast. She crossed her legs, and his mouth went dry as he remembered what they felt like wrapped around him.

Opening the bag, he saw that it was a hasp lock with a padlock. Going into his closet, he grabbed his drill and started to install it on the outside of the bedroom door.

“I don’t understand why you’re doing this,” Lexi said, placing her plate on the dresser, now empty. “I told you that I won’t tell anyone what you’re up to.”

“I can’t trust that.”

“Why the hell not?” She had to raise her voice to be heard over the drill, and he sensed her moving closer, even though his attention was focused on what he was doing. “I haven’t done anything to make you think I can’t be trusted.”

“You’re right,” he said as he finished with the drill. “In fact, we barely know each other. One great round in the sack doesn’t make us close.”

“You’re an asshole,” Lexi snapped. “And it wasn’t that great.”

Sam laughed. “Sure, keep telling yourself that. We both heard you crying out my name.”

She scowled. “How long will I be here?”

“A couple of days.”

“And then what?”

That was the question he kept asking himself.
