“Not anymore,” I reply with zero hesitation in my voice.

“My, my!” He gives me a lopsided grin. “Message received. The way you are staring at your wife, you couldn’t have been more crystal clear. You are so completely besotted with her that you can’t see anything but her,” he chides with a deep belly laugh.

I throw daggers at him. “To hell with you. She is my wife. Of course, I’m going to have eyes only for her,” I reply. I have nothing to hide.

“Yeah, I must give you that she is beautiful. Hell, even I can’t help throwing glances at her,” he says dreamily. “You are lucky.”

I send a death glare his way. “I still haven’t forgiven you for our last conversation, so better choose your words wisely this time,” I admonish him. “And why the hell are you even here?”

He chuckles and rolls his eyes. “Grandpa invited me. After all, I am his favourite,” he says with a wink.

“Do you mind finding somewhere else to sit? I would like to savour a few moments of solitude,” I say, hoping he gets the message, but Akshay being Akshay, continues to blabber. How I wish I could just tune him out!

“No, we are having this conversation like mature adults, and we are going to sort the air between us.”

I turn my eyes to him. “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

“Stop playing dumb and answer me one thing. Do you really think so low of me that I will hit on your wife?”

I clear my throat. I know he would never do that to me. He is loyal, but my jealousy is showing up its unwanted face, whether I like it or not.

“No,” I reply.

He watches me. “Then why the hell are you shutting me off? You have hardly met me these past few days and have let all my calls go unanswered.”

I sigh. Should I make the effort and explain to him the befuddled state I am in? He sure has always been a good friend and has supported me through thick and thin.

“Well, off late, things have been muddy,” I opt to answer truthfully. Obviously, lying is not an option here when he knows me better, and I will just be wasting my time fooling him.

“How about you elaborate on that statement for me?”

“Alisha...” I rub my hands over my face as I say that one name which has me all messed up.

He smiles. “You still haven’t won her heart.”

“No,” I mumble in frustration.

I can tell he wants to have a hearty laugh at my expense but he’s trying hard to hold it back. Smart man.

“She doesn’t love you?” he smirks.

“This conversation is over,” I say, as a pulse starts throbbing in my jaw while my eyes look daggers at him.

He holds up his hands. “Sorry, I won’t interrupt, please carry on.”

I heave out an exasperated sigh as my hands run through my hair. “The truth is, it’s all so confusing for me. I love her and would like to take things to the next level, but she says she needs time to think about our relationship. I am in such a fix and feel torn between giving her the time she is asking me and second-guessing myself if it’s sensible to do that. But one thing I know for sure, I don’t want to push her. I want her to come to me on her terms and will.”

He shakes his head and smiles. “And you are willing to wait despite not being okay with it?”

I shrug. “What choice do I have?”

The grin on his face gets even wider, but he doesn’t pass any sassy comments this time. Good for him.

“What do you think I should do?” I prompt.

“You really seeking my advice?” he asks in a mischievous tone.

I stop and take a deep breath. “At this point, I could use any help that comes my way. I’m helpless.”
