Ranveer bends and lifts the little girl in his arms as he kisses her head. His gaze swings to mine as he takes slow steps towards me. For a brief moment, I did see a look of shock and perhaps regret, which he replaces with a calm demeanour.

“Where have you been? Mili missed you,” Soha turns to Ranveer, her voice is not mean or hateful; she sounds sincere.

But he ignores her. His eyes are on me as he stands in front of me. “We need to talk.”

Suddenly, I suck hard for air to keep breathing. I need to get out of here. I don’t reply.

“Daddy, who is the aunty?” the little girl asks as she palms Ranveer’s cheek. He looks down at her adoringly, but before he can answer her, Soha speaks.

“Ya Ranveer, introduce us to your friend.” She glares at him while treating me to a cold smile.

He turns to Soha and looks at her with narrowed eyes. “Why didn’t you call me before coming?”

She exhales in frustration. “Because we thought of giving you a surprise. Now do you mind answering our question? Who is she?” she demands, pointing towards me.

I clear my throat and thank God for not letting me break down. “I am sorry, but I need to be somewhere. Why don’t you guys head inside and make yourself comfortable? I am sure the little princess must be hungry.”

“Yes, I am very hungry,” she says as she spreads her hands wide.

I smile and walk up to the little one, who is still in Ranveer’s arms, and bend to kiss her on her cheek, when I feel Ranveer stiffen.

“There is some chocolate cake for you in the fridge,” I say as I tap her little nose with my finger. Her face instantly sparkles.

“Chocolate cake is my favourite!” she exclaims.

That’s supposed to be Ranveer’s favourite, too. I baked it for him.

I give the little girl a smile. “It’s all yours.” No matter what I feel for Ranveer, I can’t hold a grudge against this innocent girl.

“I shall leave now.”God, I don’t even know what I can possibly say right now. My mind is in a fog, unable to accept that he is married and has a daughter with someone else.

“Alisha, you are not going anywhere,” Ranveer says in a painful voice.

“I need to,” I retort as I walk past him without glancing at him. I need to get the hell out of here and would be damned if I let them see my heart breaking.

“Alisha…”

I vaguely hear him say my name, but I ignore him and rush towards the elevator with all the strength I can muster. I know he won’t follow me, not when he is with his daughter and wife. The very thought robs me of my energy, but I somehow will myself to continue and use this to my advantage. I hasten my steps and make my way to the end of the road to catch a cab. Luckily, it doesn’t take me long to find one.

Once I sit in the cab and give the driver my address, I drop my head back on the headrest. My hand moves to my stomach which is churning, while tears burn at the back of my eyes. I wanted to start a family with a man who has a kid with another woman. Dammit! I close my eyes. I should have known what I was feeling was too good to be true. I should have known that, just like Siddh, Ranveer, too, would let me down.

I bite my lip hard to keep from asking the driver to turn around and take me back, which is what I really want to do. This makes me chide myself. How can I, after all that has happened? Even after hearing the other woman claim about being his wife and the little one being his daughter, not to mention that Ranveer didn’t even deny, I still want him; I still don’t want to doubt him.

My emotions are muddled.Maybe that’s why it feels like I left a piece of myself behind.I’m so overwhelmed with the truth that has come to light that I can’t even think straight. I’m so damn confused about whom to trust. Everything is so mixed up. I’m clueless, unable to comprehend why he lied to me. My head is splitting at the moment, and I am unable to gauge the situation. I need some quiet to figure out this mess.
