After stripping off, I enter the shower and step under the jet stream. I don’t hear the door open or Theo step in behind me.

I don’t realise he’s there, until he slides his arms around me and buries his face in my neck.

“Sorry about that,” he murmurs.

“Theo,” I sigh, remaining tense in his arms. “You shouldn’t be here.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, sunshine. Me and you have unfinished business.” His fingers glide lower, toying with the soft curls between my thighs.

“Theo, don’t…”

He stills, turning me in his arms so that the water trails down my back.

“What’s going on with you? I thought—”

“I’m leaving, Theo. As soon as I age out, I’m leaving. This… us, it’s better to end now before…”

“Is this because I told Millie you’re not my girlfriend?”

“No, that’s not it. But we’re getting too deep.”

“You’re scared.” He smirks but I see the flash of fear in his eyes.

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You don’t need to worry about me, sunshine. I’m a big boy, I can handle myself.”

“Theo, come on, be serious.”

“I am. This, us, I’m not ready to give it up. I’m leaving too, you know. After the summer, I’ll be heading to uni. You’re not the only one with plans, Raine.”

“Just another reason this is a mistake.”

He stares at me with a look that makes my stomach curl. “Millie was right, you know.” He pushes the wet hair from my face. “I’ve never brought a girl around her before. Or the boys. And definitely not to the Chapel.

“I don’t know how the fuck it happened, sunshine, but you mean something to me. And I’m not done with you.”

“Theo.” I run my hands up his chest, leaning closer.

He lowers his head to my ear, brushing the skin there with his lips. “Give me a chance to change your mind… A chance to give you a reason to stay.”

“I—”

His mouth slams down on mine, stealing whatever words were on the top of my tongue. Maybe I was going to argue, to tell him it’s a bad idea. Or maybe I was about to concede. To trust him with my heart.

But I can’t, can I?

Because even if I stay?

Even if I let myself believe that maybe I’ve finally found my place in the world, Theo will be leaving in August, and I’ll be all alone again.

Theo pushes me up against the wall, hooking my leg around his waist and grinding into me.

“Jesus, you get me so fucking hard, sunshine.” His big hand collars my throat but it isn’t forcefully. It’s soft and tender, matching the emotion in his eyes.

“What have you done to me?” He smiles and it’s so at odds with his usual cold, brooding attitude that it completely undoes me.

“Theo,” I whisper, reaching for him, needing him closer.
