“What?” Her brows knit. “Why would Theo… interesting.” A slow, knowing smirk tugs at her mouth, making my stomach sink.

Shit. I gave too much away just then.

“Fine. Let me get my bag,” I say, hoping to distract her from whatever dots she thinks she’s joining.

Barging past her, I blow down the hall and stairs. Tally catches up with me though.

“So you and Theo…”

“Me and Theo nothing,” I snap.

“Right.” She chuckles and I don’t like the insinuation at all. “You know, I’ve been there.”

“Been where?”

“At an Heir’s mercy. Telling myself it didn’t mean anything. Telling myself I didn’t care.”

“It doesn’t mean anything, and I don’t care.”

Shouldering the door, I spot Abi’s car and head toward it. She gives me a little wave but the other girl—Olivia—looks less enthused to see me.

I grab the front passenger door and slide inside.

“Hey, that’s my— never mind.” Tally climbs in the back beside Olivia.

“You came,” Abi flashes me a bright smile.

“Not through choice.”

“So why are you here?” Olivia asks with a hint of distrust.

I get it.

Her brother is an Heir and she’s with one of them.

“Liv, come on. You said—”

“Yeah, I know. But she could at least try and be a little nicer.”

“Why?” I look over my shoulder, meeting her hard gaze with my own. “I don’t owe you anything.”

“We just want to help,” Abi offers as she backs out of the parking bay.

“Help, with what?”

“Come on, Raine.” Tally scoffs. “It isn’t exactly a secret you and Theo are waging some kind of war with one another. You’re playing a dangerous game.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I stare out of the window, trying to shove down the strange emotions swelling inside me.

I’ve never had girl friends.

Not really.

It’s hard to get close to people when you know it’s only temporary. When you know they’ll probably only stab you in the back the second you turn around.

Olivia snorts, but I don’t give her the satisfaction of acknowledging it.

“Liv,” Tally warns quietly.
