Tears brim in my eyes as I hurry toward the front door. I need fresh air, I need to catch my breath and figure out what the hell I’m going to do.

But a voice calls after me.

“Raine, where are—”

I pretend I don’t hear her and spill out of the door, sucking in a greedy lungful of air.

But of course, Olivia follows me.

“Will you just stop?” She grabs my arm and I whirl to face her.

“What’s wrong?”

“I— Nothing.” I force a smile onto my lips. “I just needed some air.”

Her eyes narrow, looking too closely. “Where’s Theo?”

“Busy getting high I imagine.”

Her mouth twists. “I wish they wouldn’t do that shit.”

“He’s celebrating.”

“And hurting.” She points out and I don’t deny it. “What’s really going on, Raine? You look like you’re either about to bolt or puke all over yourself.”

“I… It’s just a lot, you know.”

“You’re in love with him.”

I nod, a tear slipping free. Because I wish that things were different.

For the first time in my life, I wish I was the kind of girl good enough for someone like Theo Ashworth.

Someone like Olivia or Tally or even Abi.

But I’m not that girl, and it was foolish to think I could outrun my past.

“Isn’t that a good thing? He obviously feels the same.”

“I—”

“There you are.” Reese staggers over to us, a wicked glint in his eyes. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you, sweet cheeks.” He hooks an arm around Liv’s shoulder, nuzzling her neck.

“I was just checking on Raine,” she says.

“Everything good?” His glassy gaze slides to me, one of his brows lifting with concern.

“I’m fine.” I manage a small smile.

“Where’s Theo at?”

“Inside somewhere.”

“And you’re out here because…”

“Reese, leave it,” Liv grips his jaw and coaxes his attention back to her.

“I’m going to head back inside,” I say but they barely hear me, too lost in each other.
