ALANA

“Alana. Alana.”

Fear like I’ve never experienced before races through my veins, turning my entire body to ice.

I’d relive every painful thing that’s happened in my life over and over again if it meant that I got to avoid this.

I’d willingly put myself back in their hands, let them strap me to that table and lock me up in the cage.

Anything.

Anything to save them.

Another scream rips from my lips as a loud crack rips through the air before something collapses.

“No, please. No.”

I have to be dreaming.

I have to be.

This is just another one of my nightmares.

No, it’s worse than that.

That’s how I know it’s real.

I might wake up scared every night when they come to visit. It might hurt reliving the past and everything they’ve done to me. But it’s never this painful.

They never reach into my chest and claw my heart out.

That’s how this feels.

I can barely breathe as I stare at the flames engulfing the building where we found some kind of solace these past few days.

It allowed us to heal and to strengthen our connections in order to win this fight.

I truly believed we could.

I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. But together, I really thought we could reign.

Tears continue to flood my cheeks as my screams and cries of desperation and pain float off into the atmosphere.

Aubrey’s unforgiving grip on my arm continues to hold me captive.

All I want to do is run down there.

Logically, I know it won’t help.

I can’t help.

But I want to be there. I need to be with them.

I scream as the pain, the loss, becomes too much to bear.

My knees give out, and Aubrey isn’t prepared for the sudden drop of my entire body weight, and I go down like a rock.
