Realistically, my face is probably the last one she wants to find staring back at her after all this, but she’ll just need to deal with it.

“Something’s got to go our way at some point, right?” I say quietly when she settles again.

“You’d think. Shall I see if Aubrey is awake, or just order extra?” Mav asks.

I shrug. “Whatever.”

“I’ll be back,” he says, pushing from the couch he attempted to get some sleep in last night and moving toward the door.

Slumping low in the chair, exhaustion nags at my muscles as a dull throb continues behind my eyes.

Closing them, I try to empty my head and get some rest, no matter how short-lived it might be. But the second I start to drift, my cell starts ringing.

With a grunt of irritation, I pull it from my pocket to find the same number that’s been calling me recently.

I hesitate, my first instinct is to cancel it. I don’t need to deal with useless callers right now. We’ve got too much other shit to deal with. But when my thumb moves, I find myself swiping to answer instead of cutting it off.

Lifting my cell to my ear, I listen for a second.

“Hello?”

The line is silent, but then so is the room around me, which allows me to hear shallow breathing on the other end.

“Who is this?” I snap, my voice a little more abrupt than I was aiming for.

Nothing.

“Listen, I’m getting really fed up of?—”

“J-Julian?” a soft female voice asks.

“Yes. What do you want?” I ask, sounding totally exasperated but a little less terrifying.

“I-I— I’m sorry, I shouldn’t—” she says in a rush before the line cuts at the same time Mav walks back in.

“For the love of God,” I groan, dropping my cell into my lap.

“Who was that?” he asks.

“Fuck knows. Same number that keeps ringing.”

“Still didn’t say anything?” he asks, retaking his spot on the couch.

“Yeah, she did this time.”

“She?” he asks, his brows drawn together.

A heavy sigh rushes past my lips as I slump lower again.

“Yes,” I groan. “It was a woman.”

The door to the bathroom opens behind Mav just as he says, “I still think it’s a woman you’ve got pregnant.”

My eyes collide with Alana’s wide ones as he says those words and I watch as the blood drains from his face.

“He’s joking, Dove,” I assure her. “The only woman who is ever going to carry my children is you.”

Reid steps up behind her and wraps his arms around her, holding her tight before whispering something in her ear.
