“But what?”

“Will you come home with us? We’ll help you get clean, do whatever you need. We’ll?—”

“Yes.”

“Find a way to ruin every cunt in that place. We’ll help your— Yes?” I ask cutting myself off when her single word registers in my head. “You’ll come home with us?”

She nods, the smallest of smiles playing on her cracked, dry lips.

Emotion hits me out of nowhere and I fall to my ass and drop my head into my hands.

“Hey, it’s okay, Lana,” she says, her small hand landing on my shoulder.

“I hoped so hard that we’d get a second chance. But I never allowed myself to actually believe it might happen.”

“It’s not going to be easy,” she says quietly.

“Fuck, easy. Nothing about our lives has ever been easy. Why start now?”

“Tell me more about them. About your life,” Kristie asks, wrapping her arms around her legs and resting her chin on her knees.

Mimicking her stance, I keep my eyes on her as I go through the basics of our lives. I steer clear of the hard, dark shit, and I think she knows it too. But there is time for all that later. Right now, I just want to be a big sister again.

Eventually, Kristie starts to struggle, her eyes getting heavier and heavier as the water grows colder.

“Can I wash your hair?” I ask hopefully.

“I used to love bath time with you,” she confesses, twisting around slightly so I have better access. “I’m sure my hair always smelled better after you washed it.”

“Let’s see if I still have the magic touch, huh?”

“It can’t really get any worse, can it?”

“You’ll be as good as new in no time,” I promise her, aware that it’s probably one of the biggest lies I’ve ever told.

I’m in a daze combing conditioner through her long blonde locks when a soft knock sounds on the door.

“It’s just me,” a female voice says as she cracks the door open. “Can I come in?”

I wait for Kristie to make that decision.

She knows who it is, I told her about Aubrey not so long ago.

“Yeah,” Kristie says.

“Hey,” Aubrey says, slipping into the room with an armful of clothes and looking a lot more awake than the last time I saw her. “How are you doing?”

“Good,” Kristie says, unconvincingly. “Thank you,” she adds. “For everything that you?—”

“It’s nothing,” Aubrey assures her as she lowers her ass to the closed toilet. “Just another day in the office.”

“Do you really fuck and kill people for a living?” Kristie asks innocently, reminding me of a younger version of herself. She was always so inquisitive.

Aubrey laughs. “Your sister has already told you all about me then,” she deadpans. “But yeah, that’s the long and short of it. You’re going to need to keep that information to yourself though. Can’t go around advertising these things or I might find myself unemployed fast.”

“Just kill your boss,” Kristie supplies.

Aubrey laughs again. “Now there’s a thought. I just spoke to Sienna, she’s going to pop in again later, check in.”
