“You don’t want me to be a part of this, I’ll walk out that door right now and never come back.” I want to say she’s bluffing, but the way she holds steady with her finger pointed in the direction of the front door, I’m not entirely sure she is.

“No, you’re a part of this, Dove,” I say, moving closer to her. “Wait, fuck that, you’re not part of it. You are it. Everything. All of this. It’s for you, little dove.”

She shakes her head.

“No, it’s about us. It’s about this place and the people who are trying to live decent lives. It’s about the girls and the women who’ve had their lives ruined by those men. It’s about the future. Our future.”

“Yeah, Dove. You’re right,” I agree, reaching out my dirty hand and tucking a lock of loose hair behind her ear. “I want that future. With you. Us.”

Her eyes soften, but I know my confession barely scratches the surface of what she needs to hear—or see—from me.

She nods, accepting my words before turning to Reid.

He stands there with his shoulders pulled tight and his fists curled at his side.

The air between them crackles as she waits for him to put his alpha male bullshit aside and use his words to tell her what he wants.

I’ve no idea what they’ve said to each other during their stolen hours in the middle of the night, but something tells me that he hasn’t truly opened up and told her how he feels. Hell, I’m not even sure he’s figured it out yet.

“We were trying to protect you, Pet.”

“No,” Mav pipes up. “You were trying to control her and do what you think is best without talking about it.”

“Am I talking to you, Murray?” Reid sneers.

“This isn’t just about me, Reid. It’s about all of us. If we’re going to continue with…” She gestures between us. “Whatever this is, then you’re going to have to learn that we’re a team. You pulling rank and doing whatever the fuck you want doesn’t fly. It might have when it was just you and Julian, but there are four of us now.” They continue to stare at each other. “If you want there to be,” she taunts.

Reid’s nostrils flare and his chest lifts as he considers her words.

My heart rate increases as I wait to see what the fuck he’s going to say.

I can probably count on one hand how many times he’s truly talked about his feelings, and we’ve been as close as two brothers can get over the years.

Just when I start to believe he isn’t going to say or do anything, he surges forward, takes her face in his dirty hands and slams his lips down on hers.

He mumbles something that sounds suspiciously like, “I want you right here,” before he takes control of a wild and filthy kiss that she has no choice but to fall into.

Mav stumbles back when Reid leans in harder and grunts when he collides with the wall, but it’s not enough to stop Reid.

“Christ, I think he missed her,” I mutter, watching with more than a little interest and jealousy bubbling under my skin.

It seems like an eternity when he finally pulls his lips from her swollen ones and rests his head against hers.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers, making my eyes widen in surprise.

Reid Harris doesn’t apologize ever.

To anyone.

I’m pretty sure hell might have just frozen over.

But if he thought those two little words and a hot as hell kiss were going to make her forget the events of the afternoon, then he’s sorely mistaken.

“Prove it,” she says firmly before stepping forward, making him move out of the way before leading Mav toward the stairs. “And don’t follow us,” she warns before they climb the stairs together and disappear.

“The fuck?” I mutter with a pout.

Reid shakes his head. “Put your fucking dick away and clean up your mess,” he demands before marching away, muttering under his breath about pain in the ass women.
