“I told you,” I announce after a few seconds. “Those phone calls you’ve been getting they’re from?—”

“No,” JD snaps, suddenly pushing to his feet so fast his chair topples. “NO, that’s not?—”

“What do you mean, phone calls?” Ezra asks a beat before JD blows from the room.

“Shit,” Alana hisses, watching him go. She stands but hesitates to leave without hearing more.

“Did she say why she wanted to talk to him?” Alana asks.

“No, she just wanted to know if I knew him,” Ezra explains with a frown.

“What did you say to her?” I ask.

“That he was a good friend of mine, but I wasn’t going to give any information over unless she could tell me why she wanted to know. What phone calls?” he repeats.

“He’s been getting these random phone calls and messages from a number we don’t know. Most of the time, they hang up as soon as he answers, or it’s just a message asking him to call them back. The one time they spoke, it was a female voice,” Alana explains.

“I was teasing that it was a woman he’d got up the duff and— Well, he didn’t like that suggestion much.”

“So I see,” Ezra mutters, looking in the direction our friend bolted. “Have you given the number to Ellis to run through his system? He’ll tell you who she is.”

Our combined silence is enough to give him our answer.

“Fucking hell,” he mutters, earning another telling-off from his favorite princess. “I’ll get him over here.”

“He’ll be in class,” Reid points out.

Ezra rolls his eyes. “Some things are more important than class, you know.”

“Like having two breakfasts and sharing some gossip?” Griff asks lightly.

“Exactly. The only thing better would have been if she’d given me her number,” he says, folding his arms over his chest once he’s finished typing.

“So you can stalk her in return.”

“You know, she’s that hot, I might just.”

“I’m going to check on him,” Alana says before slipping from the room.

“Haven’t you got a big enough pool to choose from at college?” Reid asks, after watching Alana go.

“Of course, but more options are never a bad thing.”

Reid shakes his head and scrubs his hand down his face before he gets up to start clearing away the plates.

Griff and I help while Ezra entertains Daisy by opening up the menagerie of unicorns he bought her, making them run across the table in front of her and eat what’s left of her pancakes.

By the time we’ve loaded the dishwasher and cleaned up, they’ve moved onto the first craft set.

“I swear to God, if I come back to find glitter all over my kitchen, I’ll disown you,” Reid warns, glaring at his brother.

“Dude, as if it would be that easy,” he mutters.

“Griff, watch them. I mean it,” Reid warns, before marching from the room with me hot on his tail.

Following voices, we find that JD and Alana haven’t gone very far. They’re sitting together on one of the couches in the living room.

“Ez has summoned Ellis. He’ll run the number and we’ll find out who she is. We should have done it before now but?—"
