We just have to trust her to do what’s right for her.

Kurt is barely hanging on to life down there. As per Alana’s wishes, we’re keeping him alive. Just about.

Razor is gone.

Victor is almost in our clutches and every day we’re getting more and more information about the girls who have been trafficked across the country. Somehow, someday, we’re going to bring it all toppling to the ground. It might take some time, and we could very well need a lot of help, but I’m confident.

“David Anthony Bellamy is her father. He’s a well-respected businessman in Maddison County turned politician. Rosemary Anne Bellamy is her mother. I can’t figure out what she does other than get photographed a lot at events,” Ellis explains.

“Probably a socialite who spends her time campaigning for world peace,” Alana pipes up.

“Whoa, judgy much?” I tease.

“Sorry, but isn’t that what all the wives of high-flying businessmen and politicians do?”

When no one has an answer, she smiles smugly.

“This is great and all, but it doesn’t explain who she is or what she wants from me.”

“No,” Ellis muses. “Have you considered… calling her and asking?” he suggests with amusement glittering in his eyes.

“Alright, no need to be a smart ass,” I mutter.

He raises a brow.

“What?” I hiss. “I’m not scared if that’s what you’re thinking. Not of a seventeen-year-old girl.”

“I’ll go with you and hold your hand if you like,” Ezra pipes up.

“I think the farther you are from this girl the better,” I mutter, pushing the chair back and encouraging Alana to stand, so I can do the same.

Grabbing my coffee, I take it with me as I walk over to the windows to gaze out at the town before us.

Anxious energy buzzes through my system. I need to do something to squash it.

My fingers rap on my mug as I consider my options.

“Hey, you okay?” Alana asks, stepping up to me and wrapping her cool hands around my forearms.

“Y-yeah,” I stutter, sounding anything but okay.

Her eyes narrow. “Don’t lie to me, Julian.”

“I am okay, I’m just… I dunno, confused, I guess.”

“What do you need to make it better?”

I think for a moment. I can tell what she’s expecting me to say from the way her eyes darken but that isn’t the direction I go in… yet. “Come work out with me?” I ask, making her give me a double take.

“W-work out with you?”

“Yeah. I need to burn off some energy, and we need to be in top shape ready for battle, baby.”

“Y-yeah, I guess,” she agrees.

We finish our coffees before letting the others know where we’re going and head upstairs.

I’m pretty sure she expects me to turn the tables on her and throw her onto my bed instead, but I don’t.
