“No recollection at all?” he asks, studying me closely.

“Nope. Never heard of her.

Ezra’s lips part to say something, but I quickly shut him down before the inevitable falls from his lips.

“Don’t even go there,” I warn.

“What?” he asks innocently. “I know for a fact that I don’t ask for ID and proof of address before I…” He makes a lewd gesture instead of saying the words, seeing as he’s sitting on the floor playing princesses.

It’s really quite a sight.

“Okay, so…” Ellis starts, losing himself in his computer once again as he digs a little deeper.

“Oh shi—” Ellis cuts himself off before the bad word passes his lips, proving just how much more self-control he has compared to his twin brother. “Ez, the girl you’re lusting over, she’s only seventeen.”

Ezra ponders that information for a moment.

“Meh, could be worse.”

“Ezra,” Alana chastises.

“What? For all we know her birthday could be next week. She could be waiting for me.” He wiggles his brows.

“Oh, he’s not wrong though. She’s pretty,” Alana says, staring over Ellis’s shoulder.

“Really? Let’s see,” I say shifting closer.

“Oh?” Alana teases, raising her brows.

“This girl has been trying to contact me daily for weeks. I think I deserve to see who she is.”

“I’m teasing,” Alana says, dropping into my lap to soothe me. “Okay, I’ve never slept with her,” I confirm the second my eyes land on her profile picture.

I’m not sure if Alana appreciated how tense she was about the possibility of the random woman—no, girl—being my baby momma or not, but she physically relaxes the second I say those words.

“Good,” Ezra mutters. “I didn’t want your sloppy seconds.”

Shaking my head at him, I focus on her social media profile, but there isn’t much there.

“It’s locked up pretty tight,” he says.

“So who is she?”

“Let me keep digging.”

He continues to tap away while Mav makes us all coffee.

Reid excused himself to take a call, one that I hope will help to push things along.

We’re on edge waiting to pull the trigger. Literally.

Everything is finally going our way.

Kristie is coming out on the other side of her withdrawal. If it weren’t for Daisy’s appearance, I think she’d be out of the basement by now, but she’s decided to stay down there. Like her big sister, I think she might be more comfortable locked away from the reality that is life a little more than she should be.

I think she feels safe down there. She knows that the temptation of any kind of vice is impossible to get her hands on. She can also suffer mostly on her own. If she were up here, she’d probably feel like we were watching her, waiting to see if she’s at risk of relapsing or anything. It doesn’t matter that we can watch her twenty-four-seven if we so wish.

Stepping back into real life after what she’s lived through these past few years must be terrifying. I can’t even comprehend just how terrifying. None of us can.
