There is so much more to Reid than I ever expected. And I’m not ashamed to admit now that I actually quite like him. Not that I’m going to tell him that of course.

The way he cares about those he loves. His need to make not just his life better but the lives of the people of our fucked-up town is surprising yet totally welcome.

It makes me wonder how things could have been if I’d bothered to look closer at the man behind the Hawks mask. We could have embarked on this partnership long ago. Life could have been so different for everyone.

“Yeah,” he finally says, killing the engine and reaching over to open the glove box.

JD and I are already packing and ready. Reid and Alana aren’t though.

The thought of handing Alana a gun and allowing her to walk into this battle with us fucking terrifies me. But I know it’s the way it has to be.

I trust her with a gun. I’ve spent more than enough time training her. If she needs to fire then I’ve no doubt her shot will hit its mark.

“Thank you,” she says, wrapping her fingers around the cool metal and inspecting the piece.

“It’s the same as the one you’ve trained with,” I assure her.

“I know what I’m doing. You don’t need to worry about me.”

“We’ll always worry about you, Dove. And just in case you need it, I got you this too,” JD says, passing something between the front seats.

“What the— Oh my God.” She gasps, pulling the small dagger from the sheath.

Even in the dark, the pink diamonds that cover the handle glitter brightly.

“Where the hell did you get that?” Reid barks. I’m not sure if he’s impressed or horrified.

“Had it a while. Been saving it for the right time,” JD announces smugly. “You like it, baby.”

“It’ll look better with my father’s blood dripping down it.”

Silence follows her statement before we all happily agree.

“We doing this?” Reid asks after checking the time.

“Fuck, yeah we’re doing this,” JD confirms, throwing his door open and jumping out.

“Mav?” Reid asks, glancing at me in the mirror.

“Right behind you, Boss,” I tease, also climbing out of the car.

Reid and Alana don’t follow immediately but with the interior light off and the reflections on the window, it’s almost impossible to see what they’re doing. Although, I have a very good idea.

“They’d better not be having a pre-blood bath fuck,” JD scoffs.

He spent the entire time Alana was upstairs with Reid at the house complaining about his blue balls.

While I sympathized—it was easy to do after years of pining for a woman I wouldn’t allow myself to have—it was also amusing as fuck.

After another couple of seconds, Alana’s door finally opens and she slips from her seat.

JD immediately pulls her into his arms, making me smirk. He really is a needy little puppy. It would be annoying if it weren’t so cute.

Fucking hell, I think Julian Dempsey is cute. What the fuck is wrong with me?

Reid joins us, looking a little more relaxed than he did a moment ago. Anyone would think that Alana just blew him to take the edge off. But while she’s good—fucking fantastic, actually—she isn’t that good.

Without a word, he takes off, leading the pack and leaving us to position ourselves on either side of Alana.
