She doesn’t need protecting; she’s more than capable of looking after herself. It feels good to flank her though.

Our queen.

Something brushes the back of my hand before the warmth of Alana’s fingers twists with mine. She lifts my hand and kisses my knuckles before doing the same to JD.

“I love you,” she whispers. She doesn’t specify which one of us she’s talking to, but she doesn’t need to.

We’re still navigating through the undergrowth when the large warehouse appears before us.

It’s deserted as far as I can tell, but if Kai has done as he promised us yesterday, then he’s here somewhere waiting with his boys.

So are Aubrey and Griff.

I’m not sure Kai will have our backs if shit goes south, but I’ve no doubt that Aubrey and Griff will.

Knowing that Reid has everything under control, we follow his lead through the shadows before he ducks into the parking lot and rushes toward a door.

We follow suit, and the second Reid steps up to the door, it opens.

I’m pretty sure all of us breathe a simultaneous sigh of relief.

By the time we duck into the door and close it behind us, Reid and Kai are deep in conversation.

JD and I glance at each other, but he doesn’t seem overly concerned about what’s happening, and I have to trust that he knows his best friend better than I do.

They’ve spent years working together, doing all kinds of unspeakable jobs for Victor. They’re a unit, partners. Alana and I are the tagalongs.

“Okay, great. You got it.”

The pair bump fists before Reid takes off down a long hallway.

“I guess we’re following,” JD deadpans before we take off, nodding our thanks to Kai whose expression screams ‘talk to me and die.’

JD jogs up to Reid.

“What did he say?” he demands.

“Nothing we don’t already know. As far as he’s concerned, everything is in place. Victor accepted the invitation and as far as he’s aware, nothing is suspicious.”

Nerves flutter in my gut, but I don’t give them a second of my time. I need to be focused and alert. There is no time or space for any kind of unease in these situations. That’s how motherfuckers get killed.

“How long until he’s meant to be here,” Alana asks.

“Hour. You all good to wait?”

“You know it,” I agree, already dreading it.

We walk into a huge space that’s filled with old rusty, empty racking, proving that at one time this place had a use beyond a meeting ground for corrupt gangsters.

We find ourselves somewhere to sit and wait and just… well… wait.

Kai is nowhere to be seen. I can only imagine that him and his boys have found somewhere to hide out.

If Sidney finds out that they’ve used him to help us then they’ll be up shit creek with us.

Long silent minutes pass before JD starts fidgeting.

“I spy with my little eye,” he starts.
