“I can see you guys need some more time. I will be right outside if you need me, baby. I have to make a few quick phone calls. I love you.” Daniel gave me one lasting look, and then he left.

Before I could even catch my breath from the tidal wave that was my boyfriend, my friends were in my face with gaping mouths.

“Excuse me?” Claire’s face was comical, “I love you?”

The heat that crawled its way up my neck to my cheeks was scorching.

“So… when did that happen?” Amelia smirked, “it’s so much more than sex. I knew it! Nate owes me ten bucks.”

“You were betting on us?” I shook my head in disbelief.

If six months ago I would have entered that bet, then I would have lost, too. Never in my life would I have imagined that Daniel and I could ever get to a place like this.

She shrugged, “Easy money, my friend.”

“Now tell us everything.” Claire squealed like a little schoolgirl, “I want to know all about how you melted the ice king’s heart.”

“Where do I even begin?” I smiled.

After a while, Daniel came back in and sat on the bed.

“Who were you talking to outside?” I asked. “I heard you raising your voice a bit.”

“Oh, shit. I didn’t know anyone could hear me. Selena, you were right; LeVrouswashiding money from Charlotte. Her lawyer came to visit me after you left my office this morning.”

“Ah, yes, the time where you left me...hanging,” I reminded him.

“You mean the time where you were overacting juuuust a teeny bit and stormed out of my office?” he threw back at me.

“Tomayto, Tomahto,” I teased.

“Well, Kristiana, her lawyer,” he began.

“Oh, you’re on a first-name basis with this lawyer?” I interrupted.

“May I finish?”

I nodded in approval.

“Ms. Flemington provided evidence that I had wanted you to look into. I had Mark call for you, but you were gone. And that’s when shit hit the fan, and we heard the security guard’s radio alert about the parking garage.”

“And that’s when you decided you would be my knight in shining armor and come rescue me?”

“I’m not gonna lie; when I saw the size of him, I was taken aback. He is a one big muthafucka. I had to revert back to my high school football days. When he came charging at me, I just put my shoulder down and braced myself for the hit. I was just as surprised as you when I noticed he had run into the car. I later found out that it was Brandon’s new car. That’s one quality automobile.”

“I would say! He got knocked the fuck out!”

We laughed for a long time at that.

“Selena, if that asshole had hurt you,” his face became sullen, “I don’t know how I’d ever forgive myself.”

“But thanks to you, he didn’t hurt me.” I reached up and touched his face. “You saved me.”

“No, Selena, you save me,” he said as he bent down for a kiss.

“So, the first phone call I made,” he continued, “was to Brandon. He texted me to check in on you, and when I called him back, he told me that he and Lisa had worked together to investigate the claims brought on by Charlotte’s lawyer and the anonymous email. It all checked out.”
