“It’s a little more, but has a little more land.”

“I’m not worried about the land. I want a secluded place, but it doesn’t have to have a lot of acreage.”

“Okay. Well, this one is twenty acres, and the other has thirty-five. That would certainly give you seclusion.”

“That’s true.” Brett liked this house but wasn’t ready to decide, so he nodded. “I’d like to see it.”

Lydia smiled. “Great. Patty sent the lockbox code. Let’s head there then.”

“I’m following you,” he said with a grin.

“Let me make sure the doors are locked. Then we can go.”

“Sounds good. I’ll wait outside.”

Lydia nodded, then walked off to make sure everything was secure while he headed out the front door.

He stood beside his truck, looking at the house. It was a great place, but he was eager to see the other home. When he saw Lydia coming out the front door and locking it, he climbed into his truck. She waved and headed down the driveway, and he followed. He’d had little time to look around the town, but he’d been to Clifton before and always liked it.

When a call came through the radio, he saw Riley’s number and pressedAnsweron the steering wheel.

“Hey, Riley.”

“Brett, how’s the house hunting going?”

“I’m following Lydia to another house with more acreage, but I don’t need much.”

“It’s always nice to have land. You won’t be bothered for sure.”

“The house we’re leaving now has twenty acres. She’s showing me the next one with thirty-five. I’m not sure I need that much,” he said with a chuckle.

“You never know. Hey, can you come for dinner tonight?”

“Sure. What time?”

“About six. Will that work for you?”

Brett looked at his watch to see it was almost four.

“Yeah, that should be fine. I’ll see you then.”

“See you then.” Riley disconnected.

Brett disconnected the call. It had been a while, and he’d always liked Riley and Katie. He’d seen them several times, but Diane was always with him.

“Damn it,” he swore.

Thinking about her only pissed him off nowadays. It didn’t take him long to step over that line between love and hate. Though he couldn’t say he hated her, he disliked her. It was funny how quickly someone can cross that line.

He didn’t see how she’d find him. Thankfully, she wouldn’t know where he’d gone. Not that she always knew where he was before, but now he was in Clifton, not Helena.

“Damn, now you sound like a fugitive on the run,” he murmured.

He had no desire to see his ex-wife ever again. She destroyed his love for her, but he wanted to find love again despite that. Would he find it here in Clifton?

When he saw Lydia’s turn signal come on, he put his on and pulled onto what looked like a road, but he saw the for-sale sign. The driveway was treelined and blacktopped, and it seemed to go on forever.

He stopped his truck when he saw the house and stared at it. It was a beautiful brick rancher, and he couldn’t wait to see the inside. Pressing the gas, he followed Lydia to the front of it. Then he stepped from the truck.
