“Oh, Brett. You’re so wrong,” she said, throwing his words back at him.

He chuckled, and she couldn’t help but laugh; then squealed when he picked her up, walked to the bed, and placed her on it.

“I don’t think I’ll take you home.” He got on the bed beside her and lowered his lips to hers.

“I didn’t want to go home, anyway,” she whispered as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

The following day, the sun streaming through the French doors woke Brett. He squinted as he saw the sun’s rays bouncing off the pool water. He glanced to his left to find the bed empty. Then he looked at the clock on the nightstand.

“Damn it,” he swore when he saw it was after nine.

He tossed the sheet off, got to his feet, and headed for the bathroom. He had never slept this late, not even on weekends, but they were up late.

After his shower, he shaved, splashed on aftershave, and dressed in jeans and a white muscle shirt. Then he sat on the bed and pulled on his socks. He left the bedroom and walked to the kitchen to see it was empty. Where was she?

The door opened, and she entered the kitchen. She quietly closed the door, turned, and screamed when she saw him.

“You scared me to death.”

“You didn’t expect to see me? In my house?”

“Are you always a smartass in the mornings?”

“You’ll have to stay over more to find out.”

“Okay.” She grinned.

“Where were you?”

“In the barn talking to Cinder and Viggo.”

Brett snorted out a laugh. “I’m sure they enjoyed that.”

“Can we go for a ride? It’s so pretty out.”

“Sure. Let me get some caffeine in me.”

“I’ll pack us lunches.”

“All right.” He picked up an apple from the bowl and bit into it. “Breakfast.”

“I’m sorry, Brett. Do you want breakfast?”

“No, this is fine.” He turned to the coffee machine, set his cup under it, put the K-cup in, and pressed brew. Then he took another bite of the apple.

“Can we fish again?”

“I thought we’d go in another direction, but if you want to fish, we’ll do that.”

JoJo walked to him, wrapped her arms around his waist, and kissed his chin.

“No, we can do that anytime. We’ll go east this time.”

Brett chuckled. “I can tell you’re a country girl. Many people don’t know which way is which.”

“My mother. Dad always threatens to leave her somewhere because she’d never find her way back.” JoJo laughed. “Mom said if she can find an interstate, she can get home. Of course, Dad says she wouldn’t find an interstate.”
