Brett laughed. “I think I like your parents.”

“Daddy rarely says a sentence without a swear word.”

“He sounds like my dad. He’s the same way, and I wouldn’t change him for the world.”

“Same here. I love my father.”

“I bet you’re a daddy’s girl, right?”

“Yes, and damn proud of it.”

“I always wanted a daughter for that reason. My dad and I get along great, but my sister, Jade, is his world. It doesn’t bother me. I know he loves me, but I also know a daughter and a daddy have a bond.”

“But sons have close relationships with their mothers. Liam is very close to Mom. I know she’s my best friend, but they have a special bond.”

“I know. In high school, my mom had to talk to the principal about my behavior. I will never forget that man pointing at my mother while telling me that woman was my best friend and always would be, so he asked me why I enjoyed hurting her.”

“Oh, wow.”

“Yeah. It got to me, and I straightened up in school. She is my best friend. I think you’d like her.”

“She’s your mother, so I’m sure I would.”

“Let’s go before it gets too hot. If you make the sandwiches, I’ll saddle the horses.” Brett picked up his cup, blew on the hot liquid, and sipped.

“All right.”

After staring at her for a few seconds, he sat on the bench, pulled his boots on, stood, and stomped his feet into them. He reached for his hat, placed it on his head, and opened the door.

“I’ll see you in a few, darlin’.” He touched the brim of his hat, went out the door, and closed it behind him.

As he strode across the yard, he looked up at the blue, clear sky. It would be another hot day, but he didn’t care as long as he was spending time with JoJo. Smiling, he entered the barn.

Chapter Seven

JoJo grabbed four bottles of water from the fridge and two apples, packed everything in a bag, and then added the sandwiches. She closed it, picked it up, and headed for the door. She stopped to remove her hat from the peg, placed it on her head, opened the door, and jogged down the steps.

As she walked across the yard, dust kicked up under her boots, and she knew it would be a hot day. It was close to eighty already, and sweat was rolling between her breasts. Tugging the collar of her T-shirt out, she blew a cool breath down her chest.

“You should have worn a lighter shirt,” she muttered as she picked up her pace to get inside the dark barn.

When she entered, she blinked a few times to focus, then strode down the aisle. She didn’t see Brett anywhere, but the saddled horses stood before a stall. She took a deep breath and headed for the tack room. She came to a dead stop when she saw him coming from it. Oh, my.

His white muscle shirt showed those sexy arms, but the leather chaps attracted her attention.Holy hell! They emphasized his crotch, but she knew he didn’t need them for that. He looked her way, and she watched a smile lift his lips.

“You are in so much trouble,” she said.

“I got the fishing poles just in case there’s another pond.”

JoJo tilted her head. “You don’t know?”

“No, ma’am. I haven’t had much time to explore, but I remember Lydia telling me the land had three ponds.” He shrugged. “I just don’t know if we’ll see them.”

She laughed. “I can understand that.”

Then she strode to him, stood on her toes, and kissed his lips.

“Good morning,” she said against his lips.
