Brett smiled, watched him walk out the door, and then turned to face JoJo.

“I’d better get back in line.”

“Okay.” She smiled and called the following number.

By the time he reached the counter, he was starving. He ordered a dozen cookies, half a dozen cupcakes, and a cherry pie.

“You must have a sweet tooth today,” JoJo said as she packaged it all.

“I have a sweet tooth every day, darlin’, because of you.”

She smiled at him. “What a charmer.”

“Did it work?”

JoJo laughed. “Yes.”

Brett chuckled. “Good.”

“Did you come to town for cookies?”

“No. I came in to go to the Feed Store to look for people looking for work, then I talked to Sam about the names I found. Nevada suggested it.”

“I see.” She set his bag on the counter and took his credit card. “Here you go.” She handed him his card and the sack.

“Thanks. I’ll call you later.”

“Make sure you do,” she said with a smile.

Brett touched the brim of his hat, took the bag, walked out, and crossed the street to his truck.

JoJo watched him leave and sighed. That man was her world. She loved him so much, and she knew he loved her. She grinned.

“Wipe that grin off your face and get back to work,” Sloane said, making JoJo laugh.

“Can’t help it where he’s concerned.”

“I can see why, honey,” a woman in line said, making everyone laugh.

Later, as they were closing, JoJo walked to the door to turn the sign over, looked across the street, and gasped.

“What is it?” Courtney asked her as she gazed out the window.

“That’s Rich,” JoJo whispered.

“What? Where?”

“He’s leaning against the light post, looking over here.” JoJo nibbled on her bottom lip.

“I see him.” Courtney touched her back. “We’ll leave together.”

“What’s going on?” Sloane asked.

JoJo told her about Rich across the street, and her voice quivered. He stared at the bakery and didn’t move a muscle. She knew why he was there. He must have heard about her seeing Brett, and he didn’t like it. Well, too damn bad. No one would tell her not to see Brett.

“Courtney’s right. You two leave together. Nancy is staying until closing. But you two stay together. Safety in numbers.” Sloane nodded.
