“Now tell me, did you really mean it? Or was it said in the heat of the moment? I understand if it was. Giselle, we’ve all said things we didn’t fully mean. I need to know how you feel now, though.”

How was I supposed to answer that?

Especially since none of this mattered, anyway. I would be gone.

Soon.

Very, very soon.

It seemed like such a waste to spend time discussing something that would never happen.

“There are no wrong answers. Just the truth,” Nick whispered to me. The way he held me—gosh, it made me feel so comforted. And loved. Nick was a good guy.

“I—I’m—I mean, I could see myself having his baby, yes,” I said. And that was not a lie. I could definitely imagine myself pregnant with Stefan’s baby.

“For Christ’s sake, Giselle. I told you I need you to have my baby. How many times have we discussed this?” Carlo said in a demanding voice. I turned to look at him—and the expression on his face nearly killed me.

I’d disappointed him. And that made me feel like crap.

“You don’t want to have a baby with me? You fucking told me what you said the first time you saw me, Giselle. Do I need to remind you of that?” Carlo hit deep.

Really deep.

“What did she say?” Stefan asked in a low voice. And that made me feel like crap.

Because I knew that Carlo was going to tell him.

Carlo stared at me with such power in his gaze—I probably would have fallen over if I wasn’t sitting down. “Tell him, Giselle. Tell Stefan what you said the first time you saw me. Tell him what you told your daughter.” Carlo’s voice was rough.

No.

Carlo’s voice was raw.

And so was my heart.

Every time I thought about what I’d said to Dani—

Yeah.

My eyes were filling with tears as I looked at Carlo. I tried to blink them away, but it wasn’t working.

Nick’s arm squeezed me. “Answer the question, Giselle. Please.”

I wiped away a few tears. “I said, ‘Do you want to see your new daddy?’”

Carlo’s eyes held mine, and it felt like he was somehow gaining power from this interaction.

From my words.

From me.

“Jesus,” Stefan said under his breath. He picked up a glass from the coffee table in front of them and tossed it across the room. It hit the brick wall over the fireplace with a loud smash.

Eve latched onto his arm. “Stefan, honey, no. You agreed to listen and work this out. That’s not helping.”

Stefan didn’t acknowledge her.

Nope.
