He was too busy glaring at me. Just like his brother was still doing.

But Carlo was looking at me with more of a smug expression on his face.

“I can’t fucking believe you.” Stefan’s voice was full of hate and disgust. “I was the one bringing you groceries and shit. Looking after you and your kid. I was doing that, Giselle. Me.” His hand slapped hard against his chest and I felt myself shrink. I’d made him angry.

No.

This was more than anger. So much more.

Stefan hated me. He was disgusted with me.

“I looked after you,” his voice cracked, and it felt like he’d stabbed me with a knife right through my heart, “and you tell Dani that he’s her new father?”

I couldn’t deny it.

I’d told Carlo.

And he’d forced my hand.

Made me tell Stefan—and Nick, and Eve in the process.

He’d forced me to hurt Stefan.

And that pissed me off.

A lot.

I looked back at Carlo. “I told you that in confidence. I can’t believe you brought that up here—” I gazed over at Stefan and then back at Carlo, “in front of your brother. That’s cruel.”

Carlo’s eyes narrowed. “Is it not the truth, Giselle? Did you lie to me?”

I gasped and shook my head, “I didn’t lie. But that doesn’t mean those words were meant for everyone’s ears. I shared that story with you.” I lowered my voice to a whisper. “Because I thought I could trust you. Trust you with those words. And trust you with my heart.”

His mouth slammed shut and his lips formed a straight line across his mouth.

“I brought it up because I want to be Dani’s father. And I want you to have my baby. I need you to have my baby.” He looked over Eve’s head at Stefan. “And you of all fuckin’ people know that I need an heir. Why did you go behind my back and start this shit with her? When you goddamn knew I needed an heir. Our family is depending on this.”

The expression on Stefan’s face sobered, and he looked away. No longer glaring at his brother.

Carlo’s words must’ve affected him.

Hard.

“Yeah, exactly. Look the other way, Brother. Turn your head and pretend you didn’t just stab me in the back.” Carlo’s voice held a world of hurt.

Eve slid her arms around Carlo’s arm and looked over at me. “It sounds to me like you guys haven’t been listening to each other very well. Carlo needs an heir. And Stefan wants a baby, too. But no one has asked Giselle what she wants.”

Stefan and Carlo’s eyes shifted directly to me. Everyone was waiting for my reply.

And I knew, no matter what I said, I was going to hurt someone. That was the part that killed the most. I didn't want to hurt either of these men.

I loved them.

Not to mention the fact that none of this actually mattered. Soon, I would be thousands of miles away from both of them.

Not having either of their babies.

I looked at my best friend and said the least hurtful thing I could think of, “I love them both. This is an impossible question.”
