“I won’t fuck you here again, Craig. I’ll knot for sure, and it might be a while before it goes down.”

“How long?” Craig asks after a pause, and he can’t tell if it’s hesitancy or desire in his tone.

“I don’t know, but I want you so fucking much I’m having a hard time being responsible here. So we need to go.” It’s not uncommon to have someone love the concept of a knot and then find it distressing when it occurs. The feeling of being stuck and helpless, vulnerable and fragile, isn’t something one can anticipate loving with any certainty. Not really. Though every instinct in him tells him Craig will, in fact, love it.

“P-Plug me?” he pleads, and that might be the sweetest, most tempting thing any submissive has ever said to him.

Sam feels a pulse deep in his shaft, his knot wanting to fill at the appealing offer.

“No, you need to empty that come out, Craig. It’s a first release—”

“I don’t care. I want it,” Craig says, demanding. He sounds so sure that Sam is almost tempted, but it would be madness to plug him up, to make the craving worse than it already will be, and it snaps Sam out of the weird mental space he’s been in, reminds him to be responsible.

Is this what being feral is like? The consuming desire to have and claim, to take endlessly?

Craig has no idea what he’s asking for. Sam has to be the sensible one.

“I’m sorry, Craig.”

“No, don’t, please don’t,” Craig begs, offering his neck.

Sam kisses him and wants to get lost in the need Craig is so artlessly willing to give. He kisses Craig’s neck, and Craig sighs happily. “Plug me, Daddy,” he murmurs.

“We can’t. If you want it next time, we’ll try,” he promises, and Sam pulls out of him, ending the madness.

Craig yells at the betrayal, hand going back, fingers shoving deep into his hole, but his body is already doing what it’s supposed to do, and come is spilling from between his fingers.

Sam parts Craig’s cheeks to watch as Craig sobs at the loss.

“Oh god,” Craig gasps and gets up off the floor, looking frantically for the bathroom. Sam points to the door, and Craig dashes toward it, shutting it behind him. Better. His body will eliminate thoroughly so he can be used for the next few days.

Sam gets redressed, and that’s when Dr. Beck comes back in again, drops a towel over the mess on the floor for the janitor to clean up, and gives Sam access to Craig’s file.

“I don’t recollect consummation outside of your quarters before now,” he says in the most bored tone possible. And, of course, that’s going to go in Sam’s file, too.

The nurse comes back in and wants to do another cheek swab, always so curious about how exactly these man-made, military creations work, their bodies, instincts, and actions a constant process to be studied and analyzed.

Sam has never minded the tests and the questions, never worried about what conclusions they might reach because his behavior has always been impeccable. There was nothing to see.

Maybe it’s just Craig’s experiences or even his anxiety that’s rubbing off on Sam, but the urge to just leave, take his submissive and hide him away, pounds through him.

He smiles and shoves it down. Deep breath in, soft exhale. “He’s gorgeous. Absolutely lovely and very unsettled after all he’s been through,” Sam says conspiratorially. He shrugs, as close as he can get to saying, “Don’t worry about it, don’t look too closely, nothing that interesting has happened here.”

“Would you have plugged him if that had been an option?” Dr. Beck asks and doesn’t even bother looking up from his data pad.

Sam isn’t an idiot. There are cameras everywhere, and the nurse is also watching him closely, observing his behavior.

Rage pulses through him. He smiles and drops his gaze as a submissive would.

Sam is not like the other Dominants. He is not going to be trapped, and obviously, he isn’t feral. Sam has always been in control of himself.

“Of course not,” he says because that would have created all sorts of problems for the two of them. It’s obvious now, in a way it wasn’t during their first encounter. Christ, if he’d kept Craig plugged up with his release until he took him again, it would have had serious consequences for the future. They might have been chemically bonded together, and separation can become very difficult after that. If any sort of hormonal dependency develops, then a couple is stuck—they’ll need to be together for every cycle—and everything has to change then. All missions have to be reconfigured so they can go together, some submissives become unable to fight, and some Dominants can’t control their protective instincts, which means submissives can’t be put in danger.

If a couple permanently bonds, then the government is out two very expensive weapons. It happens, but the government wants to avoid it when possible. He knows there are couples that get reassigned, sent to opposite sides of the country to ensure a bond doesn’t form. The government says it’s a coincidence when two compatible partners get separated right after an intense cycle, but they all know it isn’t.

The bond can happen quickly, but usually, there’s a bit of time after a cycle to break an undesirable connection. Physical separation, distraction through work and missions, and drugs that dampen the bond, artificially lift the mood.

The couple is parted, promotions and raises are given, and most of the time, that’s enough to keep the couple unentangled and recommitted to the cause.
