It’s a fucking shit show.

And it hasn’t been improved by the fact that his friend Robert, who just so happens to be the head of Designation Resources at his base, has reached out to tell him that Craig wants to be his submissive. Which means he can have him. He can get back to base, debrief, and go straight to his submissive and claim him like he needs to. Will Craig still be his boy? Will he still call Sam Daddy?

He hopes so.

Somehow, the time passes, and he makes it back to base. He wants to go straight to Craig but resists the urge. He changes, showers, debriefs, files his report, and jerks off.

Not in that order. In fact, he’s wondering if he should jerk off again before going to see Craig because he’s likely to turn up with a hard dick and the beginnings of a knot, and they need to talk first.

Robert finds him in his office, staring at nothing.

“I do not want to know what you’re thinking about. The pheromones are eye-watering.”

“Really?”

Robert shrugs. “I know you, and I spend a lot of time with Dominants; believe me, I know the signs.”

“It’s a smell?” Sam asks and tries giving himself a sniff.

Robert laughs. “Not like that. It’s just… do you know the smell of ozone? Or hot cement that radiates heat? It’s kind of like that. It’s sort of a smell, but not really. Maybe it’s a feeling. And the back of my neck prickles. It’s subtle, but it’s noticeable.”

He comes in, sits down across from Sam, and drops a file onto his desk with a thud.

“To what do I owe the honor?” Sam asks and leans back in his chair.

“Your relationship with Craig. Who is great, by the way. He’s settling in well, and I’m getting good reports about his reintegration class and from his therapist. He needs a few friends and to start figuring out what he wants to do next, and he’ll be fine. Plus, he has you.”

Sam runs a hand through his hair and tries shake off some of the tension in his neck. “Oh, he has me, alright. I can’t even sleep. I think I almost got a few guys killed out there.”

“Yeah, I heard that,” he says calmly. “It happens. No one got hurt. And everyone knew you were compromised. That was built in to the mission and your assignment on it. Don’t stress about it. The mission is over, everyone is fine.”

“We found two more men, you know.”

Robert nods gravely. “I do.”

“And?”

“And what?”

“Will they come out of stasis?”

“I don’t know. One chamber malfunctioned probably a decade ago. We think he’s brain dead. The other one is a possibility. But we’re a little short-staffed at the moment, so he’ll be in stasis for a few more weeks until we figure out if he’ll stay here or go to another base.”

“How long did you wait to bring Craig out?” Sam asks.

“Not me. I have people I answer to, and you know that. Craig was found and brought out quickly because his submissive scores were so very high. He has high intelligence and high compliance, willingness to complete his missions, and is obedient. You know he was shot, right?”

“I… no. I know almost nothing about him other than the parts of his file I read.”

“It was his final mission, and it was a one-way trip. He didn’t know it was a one-way trip, by the way. But he was very, very good, and so he made it out before the explosives went off. He was shot on the way out. He managed to get back to his handlers. They shoved him into a cryo tube, still bleeding, and just never opened it up again. We weren’t actually sure we could patch him up quickly enough once he started to defrost.”

It’s awful. His poor boy. There’s so much rage and sadness roiling through him that he doesn’t trust himself to speak. What the fuck could he even say?

“He gave the military everything, and he was treated like garbage. He is very submissive, and the fact that his file is as sparse as it is—that’s a bad fucking sign. If this was my boy, I would get him out of the military immediately. He might feel conflicted about that because he wants to serve and submit, but I personally don’t believe that’s good for him. Get him out. Figure out what he wants to do next. Guide him to develop civilian interests and hobbies. He’ll need structure and boundaries. You can’t take a submissive straight from the type of confined existence he had in the military and not offer him boundaries and rules. He’s been informed of the possibility of barbing and had zero hesitation in consenting to that experience. He romanticized the idea without prompting. I can tell you from experience after talking to many submissives about barbing that his enthusiastic reaction is not typical.”

“You like him,” Sam says, happy that his friend likes the submissive he’s falling for.

“I do. I think he seems like a really nice guy, and I think you won’t find anyone who will meet your needs as closely as he can.”
