I nod, still dazed by the intensity of his kiss, and let him lead me through the house and out to his car. The chilly evening air washes over me as we step outside, making me shiver despite the heat that still lingers from our embrace.

“Are you cold?” Antonio asks, concern etched in his features as he opens the passenger door for me.

“Not at all, just a little bit nervous,” I admit with a smile, climbing into the sleek car. He grins back at me before closing the door and walking around to the driver’s side.

As we drive through the dimly lit streets, Antonio begins to talk about his family. “You know, Harper, my family is everything to me,” he says, his voice filled with love and pride. “My parents are incredibly supportive, and my siblings…well, they’re a handful, but I wouldn’t trade them for anything.”

“Tell me more about them,” I urge, genuinely interested in learning about the people who shaped the man beside me.

“Well, my oldest brother, Marco, is a bit of a workaholic,” he chuckles. “He’s taken over the family business and has big plans for its future. Then there’s my sister, Isabella. She’s a force to be reckoned with—strong-willed, confident, and absolutely stunning. And finally, my younger brother, Luca, who’s still finding his way in life, but I have no doubt he’ll do great things.”

“Sounds like you’re really close with your family,” I say, feeling a pang of envy for the bond they share.

“I am,” he confirms, reaching over to give my hand a reassuring squeeze.

The car comes to a smooth stop, and I glance out the window at the charming old building before us. Its ivy-covered walls and intricate stonework give it an air of enchantment, as if it’s been plucked straight from a fairy tale.

“Here we are,” Antonio announces, his voice filled with excitement. He opens the door for me, and I step out into the cool evening air, my heart pounding in anticipation.

“Wow, this place is beautiful,” I breathe, taking it all in. The building’s aged exterior stands in stark contrast to the sleek modernity of the city around us, making it feel like a secret haven in the midst of all the chaos.

“Wait until you see what’s inside,” Antonio teases, offering me his arm. With a smile, I accept it, allowing him to lead me toward the entrance.

As we pass through the heavy wooden doors, I’m immediately struck by the breathtaking interior. The room is a symphony of glass and steel, with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer stunning views of the city skyline. A massive crystal chandelier hangs overhead, casting a warm glow over the space, while tasteful artwork adorns the walls. It’s unlike any venue I’ve ever seen—modern and expensive, yet somehow still inviting.

My eyes wander around the room, taking in the luxurious surroundings and the beautiful people milling about. I suddenly feel out of place as I notice how extravagantly everyone is dressed. Sequined gowns and tailored suits fill the space, clashing with my simple overalls, shirt, and sneakers. My cheeks flush with embarrassment, and I wish I had chosen a more sophisticated outfit.

“Antonio,” I whisper, tugging nervously at his arm. “Everyone here is so…fancy. You said this was a casual event.”

He glances around, seemingly unfazed by the sea of elegance before us. With a reassuring smile, he leans closer, his warm breath tickling my ear as he speaks. “Don’t worry, Harper. You look amazing just the way you are.”

I can’t help but smile at his words, but the uncertainty still gnaws at me. As we continue to move through the room, I can feel the weight of curious gazes upon us—or rather, upon me. It seems like everyone is wondering why the girl in overalls is here, and I can’t shake the feeling that I’m being judged.

Antonio squeezes my hand gently. “Brace yourself—you’re about to be thrown into the world of high society.”

I swallow hard, my stomach twisting with nerves. High society? That’s not a world I’ve ever been a part of, nor one I ever thought I’d find myself in. I feel like a fish out of water.

Just as my thoughts begin to spiral, a woman walks toward us, her confident stride commanding attention. She’s dressed impeccably in a designer gown that hugs her curves, her dark hair styled in a sophisticated updo. Her eyes lock onto Antonio, and a bright smile spreads across her face.

“Antonio!” she exclaims, throwing her arms around him. Antonio returns the embrace, his own smile warm and genuine.

“Isabella,” he greets her, pulling back to take a good look at her. “You look incredible. It’s been too long.”

I recognize that name. It’s his sister. And she doesn’t seem impressed by me.

HARPER

“Harper, this is my sister, Isabella,” Antonio says, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze.

“Nice to meet you,” I say, extending my hand toward her, trying my best to be polite. But I can feel it, the way her eyes rake over my body, judging my simple outfit as if it isn’t worthy of being in her presence.

“Interesting choice of outfit, dear.” Her words are coated in sugar, but her disdain is evident. “I suppose it’s…unique.”

“Thank you,” I reply, swallowing my hurt. “It’s one of my favorites.” Will it be better to pretend like it was intentional? Or will that make her like me even less?

“Is it?” She raises an eyebrow, clearly not impressed.
