“Seriously?” I asked.

“Very,” she replied. “That being said, the palace is now yours. However, you may continue to live here.”

“And spend holidays in Hell?” I asked, making sure she wasn’t hiding anything.

The question threw her. I was good like that.

Lilith shrugged. “I suppose if you want to. Although, the Darkness isn’t all that big on human holidays.”

“Got it,” I said, slightly embarrassed. It might be better to listen and not talk for a bit.

“A Demon Goddess never kills unless it’s in defense of her people or herself,” Lilith explained.

“Guess Pandora missed that memo,” I said, unable to stop myself.

“Amongst others,” my mom agreed flatly. “On to your other concerns. The throne isn’t made of fire, so your ass is safe.”

“Oh! Thank goodness for that!” Uncle Joe said.

Lilith giggled. I was surprised she could hear Uncle Joe, but she still had a slight glow around her.

“Cecily doesflameto please,” Sean added with a mouthful of nacho.

“Very punny,” I muttered. “I’m not sure if that was sweet or gross.”

“Me either,” Sean agreed with a chuckle. “Can you tell I’m a sitcom writer and a poet?”

“Nope,” I replied, tossing the bag of gummies at him.

It was hard to believe how incredibly normal our interaction was considering the conversation being had.

“More, please,” I said to Lilith.

She obliged. “I’m not sure what a Student Council is, but I assure you that Dagon and Abaddon will keep you apprised of the laws.”

“Demons obey laws?” I asked, feeling skeptical.

My mom patted the space next to her. I joined her on the chair.

“The short answer to the question is yes. However, sometimes Demons must be convinced to abide. But… the most important factor is that things are rarely as they seem,” she said. “What would you expect the Grim Reaper to do?”

“Is this a trick question?”

“Not at all,” she said.

“Take bad guys to Hell,” I replied, picturing my Uncle Gideon the Grim Reaper in my mind.

“Wrong,” Dagon chimed in. “That’s the job of the Angel of Mercy.”

“Daisy?” I asked.

I’d only met them twice, but they were clearly kind of scary. Well, not Daisy, but definitely Gideon.

“Dagon is correct,” Abaddon said. “Most souls have already determined where they will reside in the afterlife by the way they lived their human years. However, if there’s a soul in question, that’s where the Grim Reaper and the Angel of Mercy come in.”

“It was decreed that way from the beginning of time to avoid conflict of interest,” Dagon supplied. “It’s not often that it happens, but when it does, the system has been set.”

I nodded. I had a lot of preconceived notions that I was probably going to have to drop kick out of my head. “I guess I’ve always thought that Demons are bad and Angels are good.”
